Nigeria's aviation sector is poised for a significant expansion as Ibom Air prepares to launch its international flight services in April 2026. The announcement was made by the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, following a comprehensive inspection of facilities at the Victor Attah International Airport in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State.
Minister and Governor Laud Airport Readiness
The minister conducted the inspection alongside the state Governor, Umo Eno, and held a closed-door meeting with all agencies critical to international airport operations. Keyamo expressed considerable satisfaction, stating that Akwa Ibom State is "ahead of the plan scheduled" for the upgrade.
He revealed that the anticipated gaps in readiness were minimal, praising the state's efforts in transforming the airport into a full-fledged international gateway ahead of time. The agencies present at the meeting included the Nigeria Customs Service, the Nigeria Immigration Service, the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), the Police, the Department of State Services (DSS), the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), and all relevant aviation bodies.
Key Facilities Inspected
During the tour, Keyamo and his team examined two pivotal facilities that are crucial for international operations. The first is the newly constructed international terminal building, designed to handle the influx of overseas passengers.
The second, and a major highlight, is the Maintenance, Repair and Overhaul (MRO) facility. Keyamo emphasized the importance of this facility, noting that it is a standard requirement for any international airport. "This means all international airlines coming here have a facility where they can conduct routine checks before they fly out again," he explained.
Governor Eno Appreciates Federal Support
In his response, Governor Umo Eno thanked Minister Keyamo for his passion and commitment to developing Nigeria's aviation infrastructure for national economic growth. He also extended gratitude to President Bola Tinubu for approving the airport's upgrade to international status and for ensuring the release of statutory funds for its development.
Governor Eno acknowledged the foundational work of past state leaders, whose vision and groundwork made the current level of development achievable. The impending launch of international flights is expected to boost economic activity, tourism, and connectivity in the Niger Delta region and beyond.
The April 2026 timeline sets a clear target for the completion of all remaining preparatory work, positioning Victor Attah International Airport as a new hub for international travel in Nigeria.
