Keyamo, Saudi Minister Plan BASA Review for 2026 Hajj

Nigeria's Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, has engaged in high-level discussions with Saudi Arabia's Minister of Transport and Logistics Services, Saleh bin Nasser Al-Jasser, to review and enhance the existing Bilateral Air Service Agreement (BASA) between the two nations. The meetings, held in Riyadh, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, also included talks with Abdulaziz Al-Duailej, President of the General Authority of Civil Aviation (GACA), focusing on operational efficiency for the upcoming 2026 Hajj operations.

Strategic Discussions on Aviation Cooperation

Accompanied by the Director-General of Civil Aviation, Chris Najomo, and key directors from the Federal Ministry of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Keyamo emphasized the need to update the BASA framework to align with current global aviation dynamics. The discussions delved into the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed in 2015, particularly examining the sharing formula for the annual airlift of pilgrims by designated airlines from both countries.

Focus on Fairness and Efficiency

The review aims to ensure fairness, efficiency, and mutual benefits, with both parties extensively deliberating on slot allocations for Nigerian designated carriers during the 2026 Hajj. Key issues addressed included determining the percentage of pilgrims to be airlifted by airlines from Nigeria and Saudi Arabia, as well as operational concerns affecting Nigerian airlines to enhance their performance and ensure seamless Hajj operations this year.
