NCAA Issues Warning on Rainy Season Flight Disruptions for Nigerian Travelers
The Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) has issued a cautionary alert to air travelers, warning of possible flight delays and cancellations as the rainy season commences across Nigeria. This advisory comes despite recent enhancements in airline operational performance, highlighting the persistent challenges posed by seasonal weather conditions.
Improved Operations Amid Seasonal Risks
According to Michael Achimugu, the Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection at NCAA, domestic airlines have shown better on-time departures and fewer disruptions in recent months, particularly following the festive travel period. He noted that operational metrics improved compared to the last quarter of 2025, even as passenger traffic declined post-holidays. However, Achimugu emphasized that the rainy season could reverse this progress, as weather-related disruptions are a common and unavoidable aspect of aviation operations.
Weather and Operational Factors Affecting Flights
Achimugu explained that flight delays and cancellations linked to adverse weather are a normal part of the aviation industry, citing his personal travel experiences with multiple disruptions as an example. He added that while weather remains a primary factor, other operational issues also contribute to flight interruptions. To address reliability concerns, some domestic airlines are pursuing fleet expansion initiatives, with new aircraft expected from recent acquisition deals. This follows discussions at the Nigerian Aircraft Acquisition and Investment Summit, convened by Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development Festus Keyamo, where stakeholders agreed on measures to bolster airline capacity.
Communication Gaps and Passenger Concerns
The NCAA also highlighted significant communication gaps between airlines and passengers, which often leave travelers stranded or confused during disruptions. Achimugu pointed out that delays in announcements, sudden cancellations, and limited updates are key issues affecting the passenger experience. While more travelers are utilizing the NCAA's complaint portal to report problems, some still face difficulties navigating the platform. In response, the authority continues to provide alternative channels, including email and social media, to facilitate better communication and resolution of issues.
Airfare Pricing and Economic Pressures
On the topic of airfare pricing, Achimugu addressed concerns over alleged price-fixing raised by the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC). He stated that his office had not received any official report from the commission but reiterated his earlier disagreement with claims that taxes were solely responsible for fare increases during the festive season. Additionally, rising aviation fuel prices, driven by geopolitical tensions in the Middle East, are expected to push domestic ticket prices higher, with fuel now accounting for up to 45% of airline operating costs.
In summary, while Nigerian airlines have made strides in operational efficiency, travelers should prepare for potential disruptions during the rainy season, exacerbated by communication challenges and economic factors affecting the aviation sector.
