Keyamo Announces New Biometric System to Verify Passengers at Nigerian Airports
The Federal Government of Nigeria has officially approved the deployment of a contactless biometric passenger verification system, known as VPASS, across all domestic airports in the country. This initiative, disclosed by the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, on April 9, 2026, during a concession agreement signing in Abuja, aims to significantly enhance aviation security and streamline passenger identification processes.
According to Keyamo, the VPASS system is specifically designed to eliminate inconsistencies in passenger data and prevent unauthorized boarding on domestic flights. He emphasized that while strict verification measures are already in place for international travel, this new system will extend similar rigorous standards to domestic operations, thereby closing gaps that have allowed individuals to bypass standard identification procedures in the past.
Expansion Plans and Implementation Strategy
The minister further revealed that the system will later be expanded to cover private aviation, strengthening oversight across the entire sector. Keyamo described this as a key reform aimed at improving transparency, accountability, and safety within Nigeria's aviation industry. Implementation will commence with the deployment of necessary infrastructure, followed by a nationwide awareness campaign to ensure public compliance and smooth adoption.
Keyamo commended various agencies, including the Infrastructure Concession Regulatory Commission and the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN), for their support in advancing this project. The Permanent Secretary of the ministry, Mahmud Adamu Kambari, echoed this sentiment, stating the government's commitment to modernizing the aviation sector through technology-driven solutions.

Adebola Agunbiade, the Director of Commercial and Business Development at FAAN, highlighted that VPASS represents a significant step towards eliminating reliance on physical identification at airports. She explained that the adoption of secure facial recognition technology will enable smoother passenger processing and align Nigeria with global aviation standards, enhancing both efficiency and security.
Johnson Oseodion Ewalefoh, the Director-General of the Infrastructure Concession Regulatory Commission, noted that the project reflects ongoing public-private partnership efforts to improve infrastructure and security. Meanwhile, Adebayo Bankole, the Managing Director of VERXID Technologies Limited, assured that the company will deploy a secure and integrated identity management system. This solution is expected to enhance passenger verification, reduce unauthorized movement within airport facilities, and support revenue assurance through accurate data analytics.

This announcement comes shortly after President Bola Tinubu ordered the suspension of a new cashless payment system at airport toll gates, which was implemented by FAAN. That system, rolled out on March 1, required motorists to use "Go Cashless" cards or point-of-sale machines instead of cash, but led to long queues, stranded passengers, and reports of missed flights at key airports like Murtala Muhammed International Airport and Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport.
