Nigeria and Canada have signed a bilateral air transport agreement (BASA) that permits direct scheduled flights between the two countries for the first time, potentially reducing travel time and costs for passengers. The agreement, signed in Abuja, replaces an earlier arrangement that only allowed code-sharing partnerships.
Key provisions of the new agreement
The expanded BASA allows airlines from each country to operate up to 14 passenger flights per week and 10 cargo flights. It also permits more than one airline from each side to serve the route, and grants special cargo rights for freight carriers to operate between third countries, provided the journey starts or ends in Nigeria or Canada.
Officials exchanged signed copies at the Canadian High Commission in Abuja. Mohammed Ahmed Tijjani, Director of Air Transport Management, represented Nigeria's Ministry of Aviation and Aerospace Development, while Shendra Melia, Chief Air Negotiator for Global Affairs Canada, represented Canada.
Impact on travelers and students
Previously, travelers between Nigeria and Canada had to connect through hubs like London, Paris, Frankfurt, Doha, Dubai, or Atlanta, with journeys often exceeding 20 hours and sometimes approaching two days. Direct flights are expected to shorten travel times, reduce layovers, and increase airline choices, potentially leading to more competitive ticket prices.
The agreement is particularly significant for Nigerian students, as Canada remains a top study destination. According to Canadian authorities, more than 25,000 Nigerians held active study permits as of March 2026. Air travel demand between the two countries has more than doubled over the past decade, making Nigeria Canada's third-largest air travel market in Africa.
Air Canada's plans
Air Canada has announced plans to begin regulatory steps toward launching direct flights between Canada and Lagos by 2027, subject to approvals. The airline welcomed the agreement and said it will announce flight schedules once all regulatory requirements are met.
The agreement marks a significant step toward regular nonstop flights, benefiting families, business travelers, and tourists. According to Nigerian aviation officials, the deal is expected to boost economic ties and facilitate easier movement between the two nations.
