UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) has issued a reminder to international students, including those from Nigeria, to gather all required documents before applying for a Student visa for the 2026 academic year. The agency warned that missing or incorrect paperwork could delay a decision on the application.
Mandatory Documents for All Applicants
According to UKVI, every Student visa applicant must have two essential documents: a valid passport and a Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS) from their education provider. The CAS is issued by the institution and contains a unique reference number that confirms the student has been offered a place on a course.
Additional Documents That May Be Required
Depending on the applicant's circumstances, four additional documents may be necessary: evidence of sufficient funds, proof of English language ability, an Academic Technology Approval Scheme (ATAS) certificate for certain courses, and a tuberculosis (TB) test certificate if required. Not all applicants need these; the requirements depend on factors such as nationality, course type, and previous stay in the UK.
Financial Evidence Rules Explained
UKVI clarified that students must prove they have enough money to cover tuition fees for up to one academic year, as stated on their CAS, plus living costs. For those studying in London, the living cost requirement is £1,529 per month for up to nine months. For students outside London, the amount is £1,171 per month for the same period. Applicants bringing family members must also show additional funds for each dependant.
The funds must have been held in the applicant's bank account for at least 28 consecutive days, with the final day of that period falling within 31 days before the visa application is submitted. For example, if applying on January 1, the funds must have been held for the 28 days ending on December 1. Those relying on a student loan or sponsorship must provide evidence from the lender or sponsoring organisation.
Exemptions From Financial Evidence
Applicants who have already lived in the UK with a valid visa for at least 12 months before applying are exempt from the financial evidence requirement. Student union sabbatical officers are also exempt. Additionally, UKVI maintains a list of countries and territories covered by the differential evidence requirement, whose applicants are not normally required to submit proof of funds. This list includes Australia, Canada, China, Japan, South Korea, the United States, and many others.
What This Means for Nigerian Applicants
Nigeria is not included in the differential evidence requirement list. Therefore, Nigerian applicants are generally expected to provide financial evidence when applying for a UK Student visa unless they qualify for another exemption, such as residing in the UK for 12 months prior. UKVI stressed that all applicants should ensure they have the correct documents and meet the financial rules to avoid processing delays.
Application Process and Timeline
The UK government has provided a step-by-step guide for international students to apply online without using travel agents. Most completed applications receive a decision within three weeks, with an expedited option available for faster processing. UKVI's reminder was shared via its official X account as part of the #StudyReady campaign, urging students to prepare documents early.
