NAF C-130, 11 Crew Depart Burkina Faso Safely After Precautionary Landing
Nigerian Air Force Aircraft, Crew Leave Burkina Faso Safely

The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) has officially confirmed the safe departure of one of its C-130 aircraft and its entire crew from Burkina Faso, putting to rest public speculation about the aircraft's presence in the West African nation.

Safe Departure and Onward Journey Confirmed

In a statement released on Friday, Air Commodore Ehimen Ejodame, the NAF spokesperson, detailed that the aircraft left Bobo-Dioulasso, Burkina Faso, on Thursday evening. It proceeded to Accra, Ghana, following an updated flight plan, where it landed safely. The aircraft is now preparing for its scheduled depot maintenance in Portugal, with planned stopovers in Banjul and Casablanca.

"The Nigerian Air Force appreciates the concern and support expressed by members of the public and assures Nigerians that all personnel remain safe, the aircraft is serviceable, and the Service continues to operate to the highest standards of safety and professionalism," Ejodame stated.

Diplomatic Engagements Facilitate Resolution

The Federal Government, through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, also provided confirmation, highlighting the role of diplomacy in the successful exit. Ministry spokesperson Kimiebi Ebienfa attributed the positive outcome to diplomatic engagements by Nigeria’s Embassy in Burkina Faso and officials in Abuja.

Ebienfa clarified to journalists that the aircraft, with all 11 crew members on board, had made a technical stopover in Accra. "The aircraft is on ground in Accra, Ghana, for a technical stopover. It will proceed tomorrow as planned to Portugal," he said.

Context and Regional Security Role

The aircraft's mission in Burkina Faso had earlier sparked controversy and reports of a diplomatic disconnect, delaying clear information. The confirmation from both the NAF and the Foreign Ministry now confirms that the matter has been resolved without incident.

This event occurs against the backdrop of Burkina Faso's complex political climate and broader regional security challenges. Nigeria maintains an active role in regional security cooperation, with the Air Force frequently involved in critical missions across West Africa, including:

  • Counter-terrorism operations
  • Strategic airlift and logistics support
  • Other sub-regional security initiatives

The swift diplomatic resolution underscores the importance of international cooperation in managing such operational occurrences.
