The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has released a weather outlook predicting a blend of sunshine, cloud cover, and rainfall across Nigeria from Saturday, July 18, through Monday, July 20. The forecast, issued on Friday, July 17, in Abuja, details varying conditions across the northern, north central, and southern regions, with thunderstorms expected in many areas.

Northern Region: Sunny Skies with Isolated Storms

According to NiMet, the northern region will experience predominantly sunny conditions on Saturday, with a few patches of cloud. Isolated thunderstorms accompanied by light to moderate rainfall are expected over parts of Taraba State later in the day. On Sunday, mostly sunny weather with patches of cloud is forecast across the northern states, while isolated thunderstorms with light to moderate rainfall may occur over parts of Taraba in the afternoon or evening. Monday is expected to continue with sunny skies and a few patches of cloud throughout the forecast period.

North Central Region: Cloudy with Sunshine Intervals

For the North Central region, NiMet predicted cloudy skies with intervals of sunshine on Saturday. This pattern is expected to persist on Sunday and Monday, with cloudy conditions and sunny intervals throughout the day.

Southern Region: Cloudy Conditions and Thunderstorms

In the southern region, NiMet forecast cloudy conditions with periods of sunshine on Saturday, along with a chance of light thunderstorms over parts of Rivers, Bayelsa, Akwa Ibom, and Cross River states during the day. Moderate thunderstorms are expected later on Saturday across parts of Oyo, Osun, Ondo, Lagos, Edo, Delta, Imo, Abia, Ebonyi, Anambra, Bayelsa, Rivers, Cross River, and Akwa Ibom states. On Sunday, the South is predicted to have cloudy conditions with sunny intervals, with moderate thunderstorms expected over parts of Ondo, Osun, Ogun, Lagos, Imo, Abia, Enugu, Ebonyi, Anambra, Cross River, Akwa Ibom, Rivers, Bayelsa, Edo, and Delta states later in the day. Monday will bring cloudy weather with sunny spells, and moderate thunderstorms are forecast over parts of Delta, Edo, Bayelsa, Cross River, Akwa Ibom, and Rivers states later in the day.

Safety Advisories and Precautions

NiMet advised residents to take precautions in areas where thunderstorms are expected. The agency stated: "Strong winds may precede the rains in areas where thunderstorms are likely to occur; the public should take adequate precaution and ensure that loose objects are fastened to avoid collision." Additional recommendations include avoiding driving under heavy rain, disconnecting electrical appliances from sockets, and staying away from tall trees to prevent being struck by falling branches. Airline operators are urged to obtain airport-specific weather reports from NiMet for effective planning.

Temperature Warnings and Hydration Tips

NiMet also warned that temperatures are expected to remain high during the forecast period. The agency urged the public to wear breathable clothing, remain in well-ventilated environments, and stay adequately hydrated to cope with the heat.
