NRC Unveils Special Eid-El-Fitr Train Services to Facilitate Holiday Travel
The Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) has officially announced the launch of special train services designed to accommodate the increased passenger movement anticipated during the upcoming Eid-el-Fitr celebrations. In a strategic move to enhance travel convenience, the corporation has implemented additional trips and expanded capacity across several major rail corridors throughout the country.
Enhanced Services on Key Routes
On the bustling Lagos–Ibadan Train Service (LITS) corridor, the NRC has scheduled a one-day special arrangement to manage the festive rush effectively. Specifically, on Thursday, March 19, 2026, the service will operate three trips, with departures from Lagos planned for early morning, afternoon, and evening slots. Corresponding return trips from Ibadan will also be available at staggered intervals on the same day, ensuring flexibility for travelers. Following this special schedule, services will revert to the regular timetable.
Similarly, the Abuja–Kaduna Train Service (AKTS) corridor will experience a significant boost in operations. The NRC has outlined that two trips will run on Thursday, March 19, 2026, while three trips will be operational from Friday, March 20, through Monday, March 23, 2026. This expansion aims to alleviate congestion and provide passengers with more options during the Sallah holiday period.
Free Train Service in Collaboration with Osun State
In a notable partnership with the Osun State Government, the NRC will introduce a special narrow gauge service between Iddo and Osogbo. This initiative offers free transportation to selected passengers as part of the state's Sallah programme. The corporation has clarified that while it will supply operational support and rolling stock, the service is fully sponsored by the Osun State Government, highlighting a collaborative effort to support community mobility.
Maintained Schedules on Other Corridors
For other routes, the NRC has confirmed that regular operations will continue without interruption. The Warri–Itakpe line will maintain its schedule of three weekly trips, with departures from both ends on specific days, and planned maintenance activities to ensure safety and efficiency. Additionally, services along the eastern narrow gauge corridor, including the Port Harcourt–Aba route, will adhere to their standard timetable throughout the festive season.
Travel Advisory and Safety Measures
The NRC has issued a travel advisory urging passengers to plan their journeys meticulously to avoid last-minute challenges. Travelers are encouraged to arrive early at stations and comply with all ticketing and security procedures. The corporation reaffirmed its commitment to delivering safe, reliable, and efficient rail transport services nationwide.
In a gesture of goodwill, the NRC management extended Sallah greetings to Muslim faithful, encouraging the public to utilize rail transport as a dependable means of travel during the celebrations. With these special services in place, the NRC aims to reduce travel stress and improve mobility for thousands of passengers expected to traverse the country during the holiday period.
