The Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) has confirmed that three passengers lost their lives following the derailment of a train on the Warri-Itakpe Train Service yesterday. Emergency response teams and relevant authorities are currently at the scene, providing necessary assistance to those affected.
NRC Statement on the Incident
In a statement issued by the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of the NRC, Kayode Opeifa, the corporation acknowledged the incident and assured the public that efforts are underway to manage the situation. 'The Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) confirms that an incident involving the Warri-Itakpe Train Service (WITS) occurred today. Emergency response teams and relevant authorities are currently at the scene attending to the situation and providing necessary assistance,' the statement read. Opeifa added that the corporation is closely monitoring developments and will issue a detailed statement as soon as more information becomes available.
LAMATA Upgrades Blue Line Operations
In related news, the Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority (LAMATA) has announced a significant upgrade to operations on the Lagos Rail Mass Transit (LRMT) Blue Line. The number of daily trips will increase from 90 to 94, and an earlier start time of 6:00 a.m. on weekdays and Saturdays will be introduced. According to LAMATA, the revised timetable will take effect from Monday, June 15, 2026, as part of efforts to improve passenger convenience, reduce waiting times, and accommodate the growing number of commuters using the rail corridor. Under the new schedule, trains will commence operations 30 minutes earlier, shifting from 6:30 a.m. to 6:00 a.m., Monday to Saturday. The authority stated that this adjustment aims to enable thousands of commuters to begin their journeys ahead of peak-hour road traffic and enjoy faster, more reliable transportation.
