President Bola Tinubu has approved a ₦46 billion budget for the resurfacing and reconstruction of the second runway at the Mallam Aminu Kano International Airport (MAKIA), according to the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo. The announcement was made during the commissioning of the remodelled Muhammadu Adamu Dankabo Domestic Terminal at the airport on Wednesday, July 29.
Runway Project to Boost International Competitiveness
Keyamo stated that the approval aligns with the Renewed Hope Agenda, aimed at strengthening airport infrastructure and advancing Nigeria's aviation sector. He emphasised that the runway project would enhance operational efficiency, positioning the Kano airport to compete with other international airports globally. The President has approved the sum of ₦46 billion for the resurfacing and reconstruction of the second runway so that the Kano Airport can compete with other international airports around the world,
Keyamo said.
Strategic Importance of Kano
The minister described Kano as the commercial hub of Northern Nigeria, noting its strategic role in the nation's economy and aviation industry. He added that the upgrade would support increased cargo and passenger traffic, further solidifying Kano's position as a key transit point in West Africa.
Hajj Terminal Upgrade Underway
Keyamo also disclosed that work has already commenced on the upgrade of the airport's Hajj Terminal, with contractors mobilised on site. This initiative is part of broader efforts to improve facilities for Muslim pilgrims travelling to Saudi Arabia, enhancing their travel experience and operational capacity.
Terminal Remodelling and Modernisation Programme
The remodelling of the Muhammadu Adamu Dankabo Domestic Terminal is a component of the Federal Government's comprehensive aviation modernisation programme. Keyamo explained that the programme focuses on improving passenger comfort, operational efficiency, safety, and service delivery across all airports in Nigeria. The terminal was named after Muhammadu Adamu Dankabo, recognising his contributions to the development of the country's aviation industry.
The President's approval underscores the administration's commitment to upgrading critical infrastructure. The ₦46 billion investment is expected to create jobs, stimulate local economic growth, and attract more airlines to operate from Kano. Once completed, the second runway will enable the airport to handle larger aircraft and increase flight frequencies, reducing congestion and delays.
Keyamo reiterated that the government remains dedicated to transforming Nigeria's airports into world-class facilities, with Kano playing a pivotal role in this vision. The Minister thanked President Tinubu for his support and called on stakeholders to cooperate in ensuring the project's timely completion.
