Trump Hails Qatari-Gifted Air Force One as Incomparable
U.S. President Donald Trump expressed his admiration for the newly acquired Air Force One, a luxury jet donated by Qatar, claiming the United States “couldn’t build a plane like this.” The aircraft made its inaugural flight on Wednesday, carrying Trump to North Dakota for an America 250 celebration.
President Praises Craftsmanship and Features
Speaking to reporters at Joint Base Andrews before departure, Trump highlighted the aircraft's exceptional craftsmanship and advanced features. “The security integration and the complex features put on this plane make it an impressive feat of aviation engineering,” he said. The president noted that the jet had just been completed and tailored specifically for executive travel.
A Temporary but Luxurious Solution
Trump is expected to use the Qatari-gifted Boeing 747-800 for roughly two years, until a new, permanently modified U.S. fleet is finished. He emphasized that the United States would not normally spend the massive amount needed to construct such a jet, adding that “the Qataris spent top dollar on its initial design.” Previously, Trump unveiled the jet at Joint Base Andrews, calling it the world’s most luxurious plane.
Transition from Aging Fleet
The introduction of the new aircraft follows recent social media farewells from White House officials to the heavily modified Boeing 747-200 fleet, which has served under the Air Force One callsign since 1990. The Qatari-gifted jet serves as a temporary bridge to alleviate pressure on the aging fleet while Boeing finishes building and retrofitting two long-delayed, purpose-built VC-25B presidential aircraft. Those permanent replacements are not expected to be fully delivered to the Air Force for another two years.
According to Trump, “There has never been a plane quite like it.” The president’s remarks underscore the unique partnership with Qatar and the high standards of the temporary Air Force One.
