The United Kingdom government has published detailed guidance on visa categories available to foreign nationals, including Nigerians, for travel in 2026. The guidance covers visas for study, employment, family reunification, and short-term visits, with requirements varying based on nationality, purpose, and duration of stay.
Visa Categories and Exemptions
Irish citizens are exempt from the UK visa requirement entirely. For other nationalities, including Nigerians, the UK offers an alternative pathway through an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA), available depending on the applicant's country of origin and trip purpose, such as visiting or transiting through a British airport.
How to Apply for a UK Visa
Prospective applicants must use an official online tool to determine the correct visa category. Once identified, applicants gather all required supporting documents, submit the application online, pay the applicable fee, and provide biometrics (fingerprints and photograph).
Processing times range from 3 to 12 weeks after submission. Applicants are advised to apply well in advance of planned travel dates.
Application Windows
Specific windows apply for different visa types. Visit visa applicants may apply up to three months before travel. Most work visa applicants can submit applications no earlier than three months before the employment start date. Student and Child Student visa applicants have a longer window of six months before the course commences.
Documents and Evidence Required
All applicants must hold a valid passport or recognised travel document. Supporting evidence must be submitted; any document not in English or Welsh requires a certified translation. Additional requirements may include a tuberculosis test result for certain nationalities or proof of English language proficiency.
The UK's official check-visa tool provides tailored guidance based on individual circumstances.
UK's Approved List of Companies for Work Visas
Legit.ng earlier reported that the UK Home Office expanded its official list of employers authorised to recruit overseas talent. As of July 17, 2026, the Register of Licensed Sponsors includes 142,459 organisations approved to issue Certificates of Sponsorship under Skilled Worker and Temporary Worker routes. A Certificate of Sponsorship is mandatory for any foreign national applying for a UK work visa, and only organisations meeting strict government criteria are listed.
