United Nigeria Airlines (UNA) has taken decisive action by suspending a staff member in response to allegations of unprofessional conduct involving a passenger with reduced mobility, Ms. Doris Akonanya. The incident, which has sparked public concern, occurred during the check-in process for flight UN0526 from Abuja to Yenagoa on March 30, 2026.
Airline Confirms Incident and Launches Investigation
In a statement released yesterday, UNA Spokesman Chibuike Uloka confirmed that the airline received a detailed incident report outlining the alleged mishandling of Ms. Akonanya. The airline described the matter as one it takes "very seriously" and emphasized that the safety, dignity, and well-being of all passengers are its top priorities. UNA operates a zero-tolerance policy towards misconduct, discrimination, or abuse, particularly for passengers requiring special assistance.
The suspended staff member will remain on suspension pending the outcome of a full investigation. UNA is engaging all relevant parties to establish the facts and has promised to take appropriate disciplinary measures in line with its zero-tolerance policy. "We sincerely apologise to Ms. Akonanya and her family for the distress this incident has caused. This experience does not reflect our ethics, values, vision, or the standard of service we are committed to delivering," the airline stated.

Uloka explained that UNA has maintained direct contact with Ms. Akonanya and her family, offering apologies and ensuring their concerns are addressed. The airline is keeping them informed of ongoing actions as the investigation progresses.
