United Airlines Carries 435,000 Passengers, 3,100 Tonnes Cargo to Accra in 5 Years
United Airlines Marks 5 Years of Accra-Washington D.C. Service

United Airlines has carried over 435,000 air travellers and 3,100 tonnes of cargo on over 2,100 flights between Accra and its Washington D.C. hub since it commenced non-stop flight services to the West African country five years ago. The American carrier is the only airline serving Accra nonstop from Washington, D.C.

Route Expansion and Aircraft Details

United introduced its Accra-Washington D.C. route in 2021 as a three-times weekly service and subsequently expanded to five-times weekly in the summer season. This represents an overall increase in total seat offer of 66 per cent since the route was originally launched. The airline, in a statement yesterday, said that the route continues to be operated with state-of-the-art Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner aircraft featuring all-aisle-access United Polaris business, United Premium Plus premium economy, Economy Plus and economy seats.

In his comment, the Head of Africa and Offline Europe Sales, United Airlines, Amit Badiani, said the airline was proud to celebrate five years of connecting Accra with the U.S. capital. He said the anniversary underlined the importance of Ghana within United’s global network. He added: “As the only airline directly connecting Accra with Washington D.C., we can offer our customers greater travel choice with not only a direct connection to the U.S. capital, but also the possibility to connect onwards via our Washington/Dulles hub to over 65 additional destinations across the U.S., including New York, Chicago, Philadelphia, and Dallas.”

Aircraft Specifications

United’s service from Accra to Washington Dulles is operated with B787-8 Dreamliner aircraft, featuring 28 all-aisle-access United Polaris business, 21 United Premium Plus premium economy, 36 Economy Plus and 158 economy seats. The revolutionary design of the Dreamliner offers customers many features for increased comfort, such as large windows, spacious overhead storage and modern LED lighting to simulate a full day, helping passengers adjust their internal clock on the transatlantic flight.
