A package worth £120 million would make Fernandez the third-largest sale in English football history, trailing only Philippe Coutinho's £142 million move from Liverpool to Barcelona and Aleksandar Isak's £125 million transfer from Newcastle to Liverpool. Chelsea insiders have dismissed foreign reports valuing the player at £70 million as laughable.
Background and Versatility
Chelsea signed Fernandez from Benfica in 2023 for a then-British record £106.8 million. Since joining, he has been deployed in midfield, as a No. 10, and occasionally on the left flank. His versatility has been a key asset for the Blues.
In March, Fernandez fueled speculation about a potential move to Spain, stating: "I'd like to live in Spain. I really like Madrid; it reminds me of Buenos Aires. Players live where they want. I'd live in Madrid. I get by in English, but I'd be more comfortable in Spanish."
