DMO Allots N1.56trn FGN Bonds as Demand Hits N1.73trn

The Debt Management Office (DMO) has allotted a total of N1.56 trillion in Federal Government of Nigeria (FGN) bonds, even as total subscriptions reached N1.73 trillion. The auction, held on August 14, 2026, saw the DMO lower the marginal rates on all three bond offerings compared to the previous auction.

Auction Details and Subscription Surge

According to the DMO's auction results, the office offered three bonds: a 5-year re-opening of the 19.30% FGN APR 2029 bond, a 10-year re-opening of the 19.89% FGN JUL 2033 bond, and a 30-year new issue of the 19.50% FGN JUL 2056 bond. The total amount offered was N1.5 trillion, but subscriptions came in at N1.73 trillion, representing a 15.3% oversubscription.

The DMO allotted N1.56 trillion, which is 104% of the original offer amount. This indicates strong investor appetite for Nigerian government securities despite the lower rates.

Interest Rates Decline Across All Tenors

The marginal rates for all three bonds were reduced. For the 5-year bond, the marginal rate was set at 18.50%, down from 19.30% at the previous auction. The 10-year bond's marginal rate was 19.00%, compared to 19.89% previously. The 30-year bond, a new issue, had a marginal rate of 19.50%.

This decline in rates reflects the DMO's strategy to manage borrowing costs while meeting its funding requirements. The lower rates also signal improving market conditions and investor confidence in Nigeria's fiscal outlook.

Market Impact and Investor Participation

The auction attracted a wide range of investors, including domestic banks, pension funds, and foreign portfolio investors. The oversubscription suggests that investors are comfortable with the current yield levels and are seeking to lock in long-term returns.

According to analysts, the DMO's decision to lower rates is part of a broader effort to reduce the cost of government borrowing, which has been a significant burden on the national budget. The success of the auction provides the government with additional fiscal space to finance infrastructure and other development projects.

The next FGN bond auction is scheduled for September 2026, and market participants will be watching to see if the DMO continues to lower rates or if it maintains the current levels.
