PTD-NUPENG NEC Affirms Mathias Ote as Substantive Chairman, Issues Strong Warning on Night Driving
The Petroleum Tanker Drivers (PTD) branch of the Nigeria Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers (NUPENG) has officially confirmed Comrade Mathias Ote as the substantive National Chairman of the PTD branch. This significant decision was made during the branch's Quarterly National Executive Council (NEC) meeting, which took place over the weekend in Warri, Delta State. The affirmation marks a pivotal moment for the union as it addresses leadership continuity and pressing safety concerns.
Leadership Transition and Tribute to Predecessor
Comrade Mathias Ote steps into the role previously held by the late Comrade Augustine Egbon, whose passing last year left a leadership void within the union. In his inaugural address, Ote paid heartfelt tribute to Egbon, praising him as an exceptional leader who consistently prioritized the welfare of union members and the overall growth of the organization. "It is indeed very painful to lose such a great and exemplary leader who made lasting contributions to the union and positively impacted the lives of members," Ote remarked, highlighting the deep sense of loss felt across the union.
Expressing his gratitude, Ote thanked the NUPENG leadership and NEC members for entrusting him with this responsibility. He pledged to deliver purposeful and inclusive leadership, stating, "I appreciate the confidence reposed in me. There are many capable hands in this union, but you have collectively chosen me. I assure you that I will provide leadership that we will all be proud of." He emphasized that his top priorities would remain the welfare of members and the continued development of the union, ensuring stability and progress in the petroleum transportation sector.
Safety Concerns and Warning Against Night Driving
During the meeting, Ote raised critical safety issues affecting tanker drivers, particularly focusing on the dangers associated with night driving. He pointed out that the increasing rate of criminal activities, such as hijacking and kidnapping, along with frequent road accidents and poor road conditions, makes nighttime travel extremely hazardous. "In view of these realities, I strongly urge all members to desist from night driving. The risks are too high, and the consequences can be devastating," Ote warned, underscoring the urgent need for precautionary measures.
Echoing this sentiment, National Trustee of NUPENG, Comrade Salimon Akanni Oladiti, reinforced the call for caution. He urged drivers to prioritize their safety at all times, noting, "Life has no duplicate. Avoid unnecessary risks that could endanger your life. Accidents not only affect you but also have consequences for your employers and families." This dual emphasis from union leaders highlights a collective commitment to safeguarding members' lives and promoting best practices in the industry.
