The United Bank for Africa (UBA) has unveiled a new landmark building at the University of Lagos (UNILAG), marking another milestone in one of Nigeria's longest-running university-industry partnerships. The relationship between UNILAG and UBA dates back to 1965, just three years after the university was established in 1962, when UBA opened the first bank branch on a Nigerian university campus. This pioneering move institutionalized banking within higher education and set a model that has been adopted by universities across the country.
Evolution of a Partnership
Over the decades, the partnership has evolved from campus banking into academic endowments, innovation, research, environmental beautification, and student development. A major milestone was the establishment of the UBA Professorial Chair in Finance in 1972, under the administration of former Vice-Chancellor Jacob Festus Adeniyi Ajayi. This Chair contributed to the creation of UNILAG's Department of Finance in 1973 and is recognized as one of Nigeria's oldest academic endowments in finance. It has supported curriculum development, research, and knowledge exchange between industry and academia.
Recent Developments
In 2021, UBA and UNILAG agreed on a purpose-built campus facility designed as a joint-use structure, combining commercial banking infrastructure with university development priorities. In 2024, UBA revamped the UNILAG Garden, now known as the UBA Green Garden, providing a relaxation space for the university community. The most recent milestone is the commissioning of the UBA Innovation Hub and Business Office in 2026, a four-floor shared complex. UBA operates a dedicated business office within the building, while other sections support broader university use. Additionally, UBA announced an extra ₦60 million enhancement to the UBA Professorial Chair in Finance to strengthen research output and sustain academic excellence. Current work linked to the Chair includes curriculum development in emerging areas such as financial technology.
Impact on the University Community
UBA serves more than 80,000 customers within the UNILAG ecosystem, providing financial services for students, staff, alumni, and university operations. The bank has also announced internet connectivity around the new facility to support research, learning, and global access for students. The partnership is further strengthened by the alumni connection of UBA Group Chairman Tony Onyemaechi Elumelu, who earned his MSc in Economics from UNILAG in 1986. Two former Group Managing Directors of UBA, Kennedy Uzoka and Phillips Oduoza, are also products of the university.
A Legacy of Collaboration
The UBA-UNILAG relationship has evolved from a first campus branch to academic endowment, shared infrastructure, and now an innovation and research ecosystem, powered by human capital connectivity. It stands as one of Nigeria's most enduring university-industry collaborations. As UBA Group Managing Director Oliver Alawuba stated, "The future belongs to institutions that do more than build structures; the future belongs to those that build minds, empower talent, and create platforms where dreams become progress." From campus banking to innovation hubs, the UBA-UNILAG story continues to unfold, investing in minds, dreams, and possibilities for over 60 years.
