Canada has identified eight high-growth companies eligible to hire foreign professionals, including Nigerians, through its Innovation Stream work permit programme, which allows qualifying employers to recruit international talent without first obtaining a Labour Market Impact Assessment (LMIA). The pilot has been extended until March 22, 2028, according to Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC).
How the Innovation Stream Works
The Innovation Stream is part of Canada's Global Hypergrowth Project (GHP), an initiative designed to help some of the country's fastest-growing technology companies attract highly skilled workers from around the world while supporting innovation and economic growth. Employers participating in the programme can hire eligible workers through an LMIA-exempt work permit pathway, streamlining the recruitment process.
However, a job offer from one of these employers does not automatically guarantee a Canadian work permit. Applicants must still satisfy IRCC eligibility requirements, and employers must submit an official offer of employment, pay the required employer compliance fee, and provide the successful applicant with an employment offer number needed for the work permit application.
The Eight Participating Companies
Here is the full list of companies participating in the Innovation Stream:
- Ada Support Inc. – Based in Toronto, this company develops AI-powered customer service software. It offers remote and hybrid roles with benefits such as stock options, learning and development funding, parental leave top-ups, and home-office support.
- AlayaCare – This firm provides cloud-based software for home and community healthcare providers, recruiting professionals in engineering, product development, customer success, and healthcare technology.
- CellCarta – A global precision medicine company specialising in laboratory services and biomarker research, frequently hiring scientists, laboratory specialists, software professionals, and clinical research experts.
- Clarius Mobile Health – This company designs wireless handheld ultrasound scanners, recruiting engineers, software developers, product designers, and medical technology specialists.
- Clio – Headquartered in British Columbia, Clio develops cloud-based legal technology software used by law firms worldwide, regularly hiring software engineers, designers, marketers, and business professionals.
- Duchesnay Pharmaceutical Group – Focused on pharmaceutical research, development, and manufacturing, with opportunities spanning research, regulatory affairs, manufacturing, and corporate functions.
- Lightspeed Commerce – This company provides cloud-based commerce platforms for retailers and restaurants globally, recruiting software engineers, sales professionals, cybersecurity experts, and customer support specialists.
- Vive Crop Protection – This firm develops agricultural technologies that improve crop protection products, hiring professionals in agricultural science, chemistry, engineering, and commercial operations.
Eligibility and Application Process
According to IRCC, the Innovation Stream is open to foreign nationals who receive a job offer from one of the participating GHP employers in eligible high-skilled occupations classified under TEER 0, 1, 2, or 3 of Canada's National Occupational Classification (NOC). Applicants must also possess the education, qualifications, and work experience required for the position.
Eligible spouses or common-law partners and dependent children may also qualify for accompanying work or study permits under Canadian immigration rules. Interested Nigerians and other foreign professionals are advised to apply only through the official careers pages of these companies and follow the work permit application process outlined by IRCC to avoid recruitment scams.
