Strategic Innovation Drives Recognition

Herbert Wigwe, Group Managing Director of Access Bank, attributed the awards to the bank’s relentless pursuit of innovation. “These honours are a testament to our commitment to leveraging technology to deliver superior banking experiences while driving sustainable growth,” he said. “We have invested heavily in digital platforms, such as our mobile app and USSD banking, which now serve over 50 million customers across Africa.”

The bank’s digital transformation strategy has resulted in a 40% increase in transaction volume year-on-year, with digital channels accounting for 85% of total transactions. Access Bank’s SME banking unit reported a 30% growth in loan disbursements to small businesses, supporting over 200,000 entrepreneurs in 2025.

Social Impact and ESG Commitments

Access Bank’s corporate responsibility initiatives also played a key role in its Euromoney success. The bank’s sustainability framework includes a $500 million green bond issuance to fund renewable energy projects and a commitment to achieving net-zero carbon emissions by 2050. Its financial inclusion programs have brought banking services to over 10 million unbanked Nigerians through agent banking networks and mobile money.

“We believe that banking must be a force for good,” added Wigwe. “Our ESG agenda is not just about compliance; it is about creating long-term value for our stakeholders and the communities we serve.”

Global and Regional Impact

Beyond Nigeria, Access Bank’s pan-African expansion has been recognized with the Best Bank in West Africa award. The bank now operates in 12 African countries and has representative offices in the UK, UAE, and China. Its cross-border payment platform processed over $2 billion in trade finance transactions in 2025, facilitating intra-African trade.

Euromoney noted Access Bank’s resilience amid economic challenges, including currency volatility and inflationary pressures. The bank reported a 25% increase in profit before tax to ₦450 billion in its 2025 financial year, driven by non-interest income and cost efficiencies.

Industry Reaction and Future Outlook

Financial analysts have praised Access Bank’s performance. “Access Bank has consistently demonstrated the ability to innovate and adapt, which is why it continues to lead the Nigerian banking sector,” said Olusegun Adewale, a Lagos-based banking analyst. “The Euromoney awards validate its strategy and will likely boost investor confidence.”

Looking ahead, Access Bank plans to deepen its digital offerings and expand its presence in emerging markets. The bank is also exploring partnerships with fintech companies to enhance its service delivery. With 16 Euromoney honours, Access Bank has set a new benchmark for excellence in African banking.
