Fabian Ajogwu Unveils 'The Purpose of the Corporation' at 2026 KENNA-LBS Public Lecture
Prominent corporate governance authority Professor Fabian Ajogwu officially launched his latest publication, 'The Purpose of the Corporation,' during the 2026 KENNA–Lagos Business School Public Lecture. The event, which took place on March 31 at the Lagos Business School campus, served as a platform for Ajogwu to deliver a compelling appeal for African enterprises to fundamentally reconsider and actively implement corporate purpose within their operational frameworks.
A Gathering of Corporate Leaders and Scholars
The lecture attracted a distinguished assembly of academics, board chairpersons, senior executives, legal professionals, and policy makers. This diverse group convened to critically examine the changing responsibilities of corporations in fostering sustainable economic development and enhancing accountability. Notable attendees included Segun Ogunsanya, Chairman of the Nigerian Sovereign Investment Authority; Mr. Odein Ajumogobia, OFR, SAN, Pro-Chancellor of Pan-Atlantic University; Prof. Enase Okonedo, Vice Chancellor of Pan-Atlantic University; and Prof. Olayinka David-West, Dean of Lagos Business School.
Other key figures present were Mallam M.K. Ahmad, OON, President of the Society for Corporate Governance Nigeria; Mr. Yinka Sanni, Chairman of Stanbic IBTC Bank; and Dr. Ibukun Omisore, General Counsel of the Bank of Industry. The event underscored the high-level interest in advancing corporate governance discourse within Nigeria's business community.
Moving Beyond Aspiration to Operational Reality
In his keynote address, Professor Ajogwu, who serves as a Senior Partner at KENNA and a Professor of Corporate Governance at Lagos Business School, emphasized the critical necessity for organizations to transcend the mere declaration of corporate purpose. He argued that purpose must be deeply integrated into governance architectures and strategic business planning to be effective.
'Purpose would remain a boardroom aspiration if it is not embedded in strategy, capital allocation, and incentive design,' Ajogwu stated. He urged companies to actively close the persistent gap between publicly stated values and their practical, day-to-day implementation. According to his lecture, authentic corporate purpose should fundamentally guide organizational decision-making processes across all critical areas, including long-term strategy formulation, capital investment decisions, comprehensive risk management protocols, and performance evaluation metrics.
Endorsements from Regulatory and Industry Leaders
The book launch received strong endorsements from several leading figures in Nigeria's financial and regulatory sectors, who praised the publication as both timely and immensely practical. Emomotimi Agama, the Director-General of the Securities and Exchange Commission Nigeria, contributed a significant perspective, noting that while regulatory frameworks can mandate transparency, they cannot inherently instill integrity within an organization.
Agama elaborated that purpose-driven governance empowers companies to move beyond basic regulatory compliance toward achieving genuine, authentic leadership. Similarly, Rabiu Olowo, the Executive Secretary and CEO of the Financial Reporting Council of Nigeria, highlighted that the governance framework detailed in Ajogwu's book equips investors with essential analytical tools to identify corporations that are strategically positioned for long-term sustainability and resilience.
Academic and Global Perspectives on Corporate Governance
In her welcoming remarks, Professor Olayinka David-West, Dean of Lagos Business School, emphasized the vital importance of such public forums in shaping contemporary corporate dialogue and driving toward tangible, actionable outcomes. Professor Enase Okonedo, Vice Chancellor of Pan-Atlantic University, provided opening remarks that stressed corporate governance extends far beyond mere compliance with laws and regulations.
She described robust governance as central to building and maintaining trust in institutions, leadership, and broader society. Professor Okonedo also conducted a review of the book, addressing the intricate complexities of defining and implementing corporate purpose, particularly within contexts where government entities function simultaneously as regulators and significant shareholders.
Adding a valuable global dimension, Mervyn King, Chair Emeritus of the King Committee on Corporate Governance in South Africa, authored the book's foreword. King observed that corporations remain immensely powerful institutions capable of generating both profoundly positive and severely negative societal outcomes, largely dependent on the quality and integrity of the governance frameworks that guide their operations.
A Comprehensive Guide for Modern Business Leaders
'The Purpose of the Corporation' offers readers a thorough and in-depth exploration of contemporary corporate governance principles, stakeholder responsibility, and sustainable value creation. The publication is designed to provide practical, actionable guidance for board members, corporate executives, regulatory officials, and academic scholars who are navigating the rapidly evolving expectations placed upon modern businesses in the 21st century.
The 2026 KENNA-LBS Public Lecture successfully highlighted the urgent need for African corporations to institutionalize purpose at the core of their business models, advocating for a shift from profit-centric approaches to models that balance financial success with social responsibility and ethical governance.
