The Asset Management Corporation of Nigeria (AMCON) reported a 29.8% decline in its total assets, dropping to N1.29 trillion as at December 2025, driven by accelerated asset disposals and loan recoveries under its mandated wind-down plan.
Key Financial Highlights
According to the corporation's latest financial statement, assets fell from N1.84 trillion in 2024 to N1.29 trillion. The reduction reflects AMCON's strategy to exit non-performing loan acquisitions and return value to creditors. The decline aligns with the Central Bank of Nigeria's timeline for AMCON's dissolution by 2028.
Wind-Down Progress
AMCON Managing Director Ahmed Kuru stated, "Our focus remains on maximizing recoveries from remaining portfolios while ensuring an orderly wind-down. The asset reduction is a positive indicator of our progress." The corporation has so far recovered over N1.5 trillion from defaulting debtors since inception.
Impact on Financial Sector
Analysts note that AMCON's shrinking balance sheet signals reduced risk in the banking sector, as most toxic assets have been resolved. However, some stakeholders express concern over the pace of recoveries from high-profile obligors. The decline represents a 29.8% year-on-year drop, the steepest since 2022.
Future Outlook
AMCON plans to complete divestiture from all remaining holdings by 2027, targeting a final asset base of below N500 billion. The corporation's operating expenses also reduced by 12% due to staff rationalization and branch closures.
