Champion Breweries H1 2026 Pre-Tax Profit Drops 34.1% to N2.28bn
Champion Breweries H1 Pre-Tax Profit Falls 34.1% to N2.28bn

Champion Breweries Plc has announced a 34.1% decline in its pre-tax profit for the first half of 2026, falling to N2.28 billion from N3.46 billion recorded in the same period of 2025. The brewer's unaudited financial statements for the six months ended June 30, 2026, revealed that revenue grew by 12.5% to N28.7 billion, but higher operating expenses and finance costs eroded profitability.

Profitability Pressures Mount

The company's profit after tax dropped by 33.9% to N1.54 billion, compared with N2.33 billion in H1 2025. Earnings per share also decreased to 15 kobo from 23 kobo in the prior year. The decline in profitability was attributed to a combination of factors, including increased cost of sales, which rose by 15.2% to N18.5 billion, and a surge in finance costs by 28.4% to N1.3 billion.

According to the company's financial notes, the cost of sales grew faster than revenue, resulting in a gross profit margin of 35.6%, down from 38.1% in H1 2025. Operating expenses increased by 18.9% to N6.8 billion, driven by higher marketing and distribution costs.

Revenue Growth Amid Challenges

Despite the profit slump, Champion Breweries recorded a 12.5% increase in revenue to N28.7 billion, up from N25.5 billion in the corresponding period of 2025. The growth was supported by improved product volumes and price adjustments implemented earlier in the year. However, the company noted that the operating environment remained challenging, with inflationary pressures and currency volatility impacting input costs.

"The first half of 2026 was marked by persistent macroeconomic headwinds, including high inflation and currency depreciation, which significantly affected our cost structure," said the company's managing director in a statement. "We remain focused on cost optimization and operational efficiency to navigate these challenges."

Debt and Finance Costs

Total borrowings increased to N12.4 billion as of June 30, 2026, compared to N10.1 billion at the end of 2025. The rise in debt levels contributed to higher finance costs, which grew by 28.4% to N1.3 billion. The company's net debt-to-equity ratio stood at 0.6, up from 0.5 in the prior year.

Champion Breweries also reported a 10.2% increase in total assets to N45.6 billion, driven by additions to property, plant, and equipment. Cash and cash equivalents decreased by 18.7% to N2.1 billion, reflecting higher working capital requirements and debt servicing.

Outlook and Market Position

The brewer faces a tough second half of 2026, with analysts predicting continued pressure on margins due to rising raw material costs and consumer spending constraints. However, the company plans to focus on product innovation and distribution expansion to drive volume growth.

Champion Breweries, a subsidiary of the Heineken Group, operates in a competitive Nigerian beer market dominated by players like Nigerian Breweries and International Breweries. The company's market share has been under pressure in recent years, but management remains optimistic about recovery through targeted marketing and cost management.

"We are implementing strategic initiatives to enhance our brand portfolio and improve operational efficiencies," the managing director added. "While the near-term outlook remains uncertain, we believe our long-term fundamentals are strong."
