Halima Dangote, executive director of Dangote Group and daughter of Africa's richest man Aliko Dangote, has disclosed that her father plans to dedicate 33% of his wealth to charity as part of his commitment to philanthropy. The revelation offers a rare insight into the billionaire’s succession planning and his dedication to ensuring that charitable giving remains a cornerstone of his legacy.
Speaking on the decision, Halima explained that the move aligns with the Sharia code in Islam, which encourages giving a portion of one’s inheritance to humanity. She emphasized that Aliko Dangote had long formalized this intention by involving his daughters and mother in the process.
Details of the Charitable Plan
According to Halima, Aliko Dangote has already donated 25% of his wealth to the Aliko Dangote Foundation. However, the 33% commitment refers to his entire inheritance, as stipulated by Islamic principles. “He sort of put all the structures in place whereby we focus a lot on health and education. He actually donated 25% of his wealth to the foundation and, if you look at what we call the Sharia code in Islam, it means he has donated 33% of his entire inheritance to his foundation,” she said.
To formalize the plan, Aliko Dangote requested his immediate family to sign his will. “He asked me, my two sisters, and his mother to sign the will so that he would be able to give that 33% to humanity,” Halima revealed.

The Aliko Dangote Foundation, which will be the primary vehicle for this charitable commitment, has long prioritized healthcare, education, nutrition, and empowerment programmes across Nigeria and other parts of Africa. Halima noted that her father’s decision was driven by the belief that philanthropy must transcend generations. “That is how important it is to him because philanthropy needs to exist from generation to generation. So, giving back is part and parcel of what we do. We believe we are here and our business is successful because of giving back and philanthropy,” she stated.
