MultiChoice Nigeria has announced another significant reduction in decoder prices for both DStv and GOtv services, marking the second price slash in less than six months. This move aims to make premium entertainment more accessible to Nigerian households during challenging economic times.
New Decoder Prices for Nigerian Customers
The company confirmed that the price of a DStv decoder has been reduced from ₦10,000 to ₦7,900, while the GOtv decoder now sells for ₦6,500, down from its previous price. This latest adjustment follows a similar price cut implemented in June under MultiChoice's "We've Got You" campaign.
During the previous campaign in June, the DStv decoder price had already been reduced by 50% from ₦20,000 to ₦10,000, while the GOtv decoder price was slashed from ₦18,600 to ₦9,900. The current reduction represents continued efforts to make entertainment more affordable for Nigerian families.
Strategic Timing and Customer Support
MultiChoice's Executive Head of Marketing, Tope Oshunkeye, explained that the price revision aligns with the company's commitment to support customers during Nigeria's challenging economic period. She emphasized that the adjustment ensures families can continue to access quality entertainment without financial strain.
According to Oshunkeye, the timing is strategic, coinciding with the upcoming festive season when families typically spend more time together at home. "This adjustment ensures that entertainment remains affordable for all Nigerians," she stated in her announcement.
The company has also indicated that the new pricing strategy not only makes premium content more accessible but also strengthens its competitive position in a market increasingly influenced by digital streaming platforms such as YouTube and Netflix.
Enhanced Content and Future Prospects
In addition to the price reductions, DStv subscribers will now enjoy live coverage of selected French Ligue 1 football matches on SuperSport, following a new content partnership with the platform's parent company Canal+.
SuperSport management confirmed that over the 10 months of the season, three selected matches will be available for DStv and GOtv subscribers every weekend. Rendani Ramovha, MultiChoice's executive head of English sports content, noted that this addition reinforces DStv's position as Africa's home of premium football.
The price cuts come amid Canal+'s ongoing efforts to take full control of MultiChoice's operations across Africa. The French media giant has formally applied to Uganda's communications regulator for a "change in control" of various licenses held by MultiChoice subsidiaries, including subscriber management, streaming rights, and infrastructure operations.
With these fresh price reductions, more Nigerians are expected to take advantage of DStv and GOtv offerings, which include a diverse mix of local and international programming across news, movies, sports, lifestyle, and educational content.
