The Institute of Chartered Secretaries and Administrators of Nigeria (ICSAN) has announced an ambitious agenda to strengthen national conversations on corporate governance. This initiative forms a core part of its activities for the new year, coinciding with the celebration of its 60th anniversary.
A Diamond Jubilee Focused on Governance
The President and Chairman of the Governing Council, Uto Ukpanah, revealed these plans during a press briefing in Lagos. The event also featured the official unveiling of the ICSAN@60 anniversary logo, themed 'Six Decades of Excellence: Shaping Governance, Empowering Futures'.
Ukpanah emphasized that as Nigeria approaches the 2027 election year, there is an urgent need to foster greater public consciousness for informed decision-making. She stated that the bedrock of these necessary conversations is good corporate governance, which is built on pillars of trust, transparency, and accountability.
Six Decades of Policy Influence and Professional Development
Reflecting on the institute's journey, the ICSAN boss highlighted its profound impact over the last six decades. Key achievements include:
- Influencing critical policies that shape the business environment.
- Playing a crucial role in defining Nigeria's corporate governance landscape.
- Promoting and establishing best practices across industries.
- Developing a vast network of skilled professionals in various sectors.
- Evolving into a leading and respected professional body in the country.
Ukpanah acknowledged the challenges of a rapidly changing global environment but urged professionals to continue innovating and adapting to remain relevant and effective.
Strategic Investments and Future Milestones
The diamond jubilee celebrations will showcase the institute's rich history. A significant highlight is the ongoing construction of its new national secretariat. Ukpanah described this project as a strategic investment in institutional sustainability and operational efficiency.
Another major priority for the Governing Council is the pursuit of the Chartered Governance Institute of Nigeria (CGIN) Bill at the National Assembly. The council is committed to achieving this legislative milestone, which would further solidify the institute's standing.
Expanding on the anniversary activities, the Chairman of the ICSAN@60 Committee, Francis Olawale, detailed broader engagement plans. In the public sector, the institute has partnered with state governors to influence and improve governance practices. For the private sector, ICSAN is organizing forums for Chief Executive Officers and board chairmen. These platforms will allow top executives to discuss boardroom challenges and collaboratively develop practical solutions.
The institute's leadership, including Council Members Nkechi Onyenso and Abiola Laseinde, Honourary Treasurer Onyekachi Uko, and Registrar/CEO Babatunde Okuneye, were present at the logo unveiling, marking the official commencement of the landmark anniversary year.
