Tragedy Strikes in Ilorin as Fallen High-Tension Wire Claims Life and Injures Another
A devastating fire outbreak in Ilorin, Kwara State, has resulted in the death of a 30-year-old man and left his younger brother injured, following the snapping of a high-tension electricity wire. The incident, which occurred in the Yakubu area between 4am and 5am, has sparked outrage among residents who claim the Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company ignored prior warnings about the faulty infrastructure.
Neglected Warnings Lead to Catastrophic Fire
According to eyewitness accounts, the high-tension wire had been showing signs of imminent collapse for some time. Mr Seyi Adunbarin, a local resident, reported that the issue was formally brought to the attention of the IBEDC office in Ilorin, but no corrective measures were implemented. "The high-tension wire had almost cut off for some time, and IBEDC had been notified about it. Nothing was done before it eventually snapped," Adunbarin stated, highlighting a critical failure in maintenance and response.
When the wire finally gave way, it fell onto four other connected lines, igniting a fierce fire that rapidly spread to nearby buildings. In the ensuing chaos, residents scrambled to salvage their belongings and prevent further damage by attempting to disconnect electrical fuses. "When the wire finally cut off, it fell on other wires and caused a fire outbreak. Some houses around caught fire, and people were trying to remove their fuses to stop the electricity from worsening the situation," Adunbarin explained.
Victim Identified as Recent NYSC Graduate with Bright Future
The deceased, identified as Olabosun Isiaka, was a graduate of Kwara State Polytechnic who had recently completed his mandatory one-year National Youth Service Corps programme in December. Described as a young man with a promising future, he was solely responsible for himself and actively working to build his life. "He just finished his NYSC last December and was working hard to build his life. He was solely responsible for himself before this unfortunate incident," Adunbarin lamented, underscoring the personal loss and societal impact.
Tragically, Isiaka lost his life during the struggle to remove a fuse, as he became caught in the flames. His younger brother sustained burns on his leg while trying to escape the inferno and was promptly rushed to a nearby hospital, where he is currently receiving treatment. "His little brother was also affected by the fire. It burnt his leg, but he survived and was taken to the hospital quickly," Adunbarin disclosed, adding a layer of family trauma to the event.
Police Report and Official Response
The incident was reported to the Police Division in Oke-Oyi, and the remains of the deceased were later moved to a mortuary in Oyun after his parents arrived from Lagos. However, Adunbarin expressed frustration over the lack of accountability, noting that as of 5pm on the day of the incident, no substantive actions had been taken by authorities. "We reported the case to the police in Oke-Oyi, but as of 5pm, when the body was taken to the mortuary in Oyun, nothing had been done to ensure accountability," he said, pointing to potential delays in justice and investigation.
In response, the Kwara State Fire Service confirmed that the fire was caused by the fallen high-tension wire and indicated that the situation had been addressed. The Public Relations Officer of the service, Hassan Hakeem Adekunle, stated, "It was a high-tension wire that dropped on the floor, and it was fixed by IBEDC staff yesterday, April 7, 2026." This statement contrasts with residents' claims of prior negligence, raising questions about preventive measures and corporate responsibility.
