The Lagos State Government has strongly reiterated its unwavering commitment to strengthening consumer protection mechanisms, highlighting the escalating dangers posed by unsafe products, substandard services, and poorly regulated markets both locally and globally. This announcement was made during the observance of World Consumer Rights Day, which carried the theme "Safe Products, Confident Consumers."
Governor Sanwo-Olu Addresses Global Consumer Risks
Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos State emphasized that millions of injuries are recorded annually worldwide due to defective goods, unsafe appliances, counterfeit medicines, and misleading marketing practices. He further noted that billions of naira are lost each year to such harmful activities, underscoring the significant economic impact on consumers and the broader economy.
Represented by the Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Mr. Lawal Pedro, Governor Sanwo-Olu expressed deep concern over the growing complexity of cross-border digital commerce. He pointed out that banned or substandard products from one country can still reach consumers in another through online platforms, creating new challenges for regulatory bodies and consumer protection agencies.
