NADDC and Pi-CNG/EV Strengthen Partnership for Clean Mobility
NADDC, Pi-CNG/EV Deepen Partnership for Clean Mobility

The Director-General of the National Automotive Design and Development Council (NADDC), Joseph Osanipin, has reaffirmed the agency's commitment to accelerating the adoption of cleaner transport technologies following a high-level meeting with the leadership of the Presidential Initiative on Compressed Natural Gas and Electric Vehicles (Pi-CNG/EV).

Osanipin met the initiative's Executive Chairman, Ismaeel Ahmed, and his delegation at the council's headquarters in Abuja earlier this week to strengthen institutional collaboration and fast-track Nigeria's transition to Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) and electric mobility. The meeting focused on aligning policy frameworks, scaling the adoption of alternative-fuel technologies, and expanding the country's CNG and electric-vehicle ecosystem.

In his remarks, Osanipin commended the progress achieved so far, particularly in addressing gas supply challenges, and described the partnership as a significant step towards building a sustainable mobility ecosystem in Nigeria. He reiterated NADDC's readiness to support the nationwide rollout of both CNG and electric vehicle technologies.

In his speech, Ahmed explained that the initiative was established in 2023 by President Bola Tinubu in response to the removal of the fuel subsidy, noting that it has since evolved into a platform for delivering cleaner and more affordable transport options. According to him, the programme leverages Nigeria's abundant gas resources while increasingly integrating electric-vehicle solutions.

He emphasised the importance of closer institutional alignment, noting that while NADDC provides policy direction and regulatory oversight for the automotive industry, Pi-CNG/EV focuses on expanding market access and adoption. Ahmed added that leveraging NADDC's technical expertise and data systems would be critical to achieving coordinated implementation.

He disclosed that following a successful pilot phase guided by NADDC, the initiative was now shifting towards nationwide expansion through training, certification, supportive policies, and broader market engagement. Both parties also explored opportunities in data sharing, capacity development, and market growth to support the sector's long-term sustainability.

This partnership marks a pivotal moment in Nigeria's journey towards cleaner and more sustainable transportation, with both organisations committed to driving the adoption of CNG and electric vehicles across the country.
