Sanwo-Olu: Effective Governance Key to Nigeria's Long-Term Prosperity
Sanwo-Olu Links Prosperity to Sound Governance

Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has declared that effective and sound governance is the fundamental pillar for restoring public confidence and securing sustainable prosperity for Nigeria. The governor made this assertion as the Special Guest of Honour at a major corporate event in Lagos.

Governor's Call for Principled Leadership

Speaking at the Annual Directors’ Dinner and Awards Night organised by the Chartered Institute of Directors (CIoD) Nigeria, Governor Sanwo-Olu emphasised that resilient institutions built by strong boards are non-negotiable for sustaining the nation's economic growth. He addressed the gathering on 23 December 2025, highlighting the complex landscape modern directors must navigate.

The governor pointed out that today's directors operate in an era defined by market volatility, swift technological advancement, and heightened demands for transparency and sustainability from stakeholders. “In this reality, directors must be informed, courageous, and principled. The margin for error has narrowed, while responsibility has grown,” Sanwo-Olu stated.

CIoD's Role in Elevating Standards

Sanwo-Olu praised the CIoD Nigeria for cementing its reputation as the leading authority on corporate governance and boardroom excellence. He noted that the institute's work is especially vital now, as institutions worldwide undergo intense scrutiny and rapid transformation. The governor also acknowledged the institute's successful efforts in engaging with regulators and policymakers to turn governance principles into practical, actionable strategies for boardrooms across the country.

Earlier in the evening, the President and Chairman of the CIoD Governing Council, Adetunji Oyebanji, set the tone for the event. He explained that the chosen theme, “Triumphs of Leadership in Challenging Times,” directly reflects the courage and discipline required from directors amid current economic pressures and social challenges.

Recognising Excellence in Directorship

Oyebanji stated that the theme celebrates directors who have consistently shown sound judgement, ethical leadership, and stability despite sector-wide uncertainties. “This has been a year when boards were called upon to make difficult decisions, strengthen risk oversight, and sustain stakeholder confidence. Many of you guided your organisations through circumstances that tested not only your skills but your character,” he told the audience.

He reaffirmed the Institute's unwavering commitment to elevating the standards of directorship in Nigeria. This mission, he said, is pursued through continuous capacity building, strategic advocacy, and forging partnerships aimed at strengthening ethical leadership and effective board practices.

A key highlight of the night was the presentation of awards to several individuals and organisations. These honourees were recognised for demonstrating exceptional leadership, upholding strong ethical values, and contributing significantly to robust governance structures within their entities. Oyebanji concluded that the achievements of the awardees prove that meaningful progress is attainable even in difficult periods, and that leadership rooted in principle endures under pressure.
