Stanbic IBTC Wins CRe Momentum Award in Rwanda

Stanbic IBTC Insurance Limited has emerged as the overall winner of the CRe Momentum Award at the inaugural Continental Reinsurance (CRe) Insurance Awards for Africa 2026. The award ceremony took place during the CRe CEO Summit held in Kigali, Rwanda.

The insurer was recognized for its strong commercial performance, disciplined execution, and a robust bancassurance strategy. Judges described these attributes as among the most effective across the continent. The company's clear strategic focus on life insurance growth also contributed to its selection as the top performer.

In the same category, Cornerstone Insurance Plc of Nigeria secured the second position, while La Générale des Assurances from Benin Republic came third.

Emerging Champions Category

In the Emerging Champions category, Agrails Ltd from Kenya clinched the top prize, followed by Britam Connect, also from Kenya, in second place.

Pan-African Re/Insurance Journalism Awards

The event also featured the 11th edition of the Pan-African Re/Insurance Journalism Awards, where journalists from across the continent were honored for outstanding reporting in the insurance and reinsurance sector. A total of 184 entries from Anglophone and Francophone countries were assessed.

Uganda's Isaac Khisa of The Independent Publications emerged as the overall winner. He also won the English Print category with his article titled Keeping it home: Africa's reinsurers in quiet bid to reclaim market. Nigeria's Josephine Ogundeji of Punch Newspaper was named first runner-up, while Ojeme Sunday of New Telegraph came second runner-up.

English Online Category

In the English Online category, Henry Uche of Daily Sun (Nigeria) won with his report titled Reinsurance: Nigeria's capacity question and propensity for expansion. Khisa secured another podium finish as first runner-up, while Zimbabwe's Tendai Makaripe came second.

English Broadcast Category

The English Broadcast category saw Blessing Ifechukwude of Voice of Nigeria clinch the top prize with her report titled From Policy to Practice: Mandatory Health Insurance and Its Impact on Healthcare for Nigerians. She was followed by Mercy Tyra Murengu of Kenya and Samuel Nana Effah Obeng of Ghana as first and second runners-up respectively.

Other Categories

Taurai Museka won the English Social Media category. In the French category, Burkina Faso's Sedgo Adama emerged as the winner, with Konkobo Estelle and Birba Fleur finishing as first and second runners-up respectively. In the Arabic category, Egypt's Zahraa Mustafa Al-Saeed Abdul Amid won the top prize, followed by Eslam Abdelhameed Abdelmutlib Farhat and Elshazly Gomaa Ahmed Ali.

Special Awards

Additionally, Josephine Ogundeji clinched the Dr Femi Oyetunji Future Talent Award, while Mercy Tyra Murengu received special recognition.

CEO Remarks

Group Chief Executive Officer of Continental Reinsurance Holdings, Lawrence Nazare, said the growing participation in the awards reflects its expanding influence across Africa. He noted, The inclusion of 10 new participating countries reflects the growing reach and impact of the awards across the continent.

Chief Judge's Comment

Chief Judge Michael Wilson added that the quality of entries continues to improve, making the judging process more competitive each year.

Winners across categories received certificates, trophies, and cash prizes, with the overall winner earning $2,000, category winners receiving $1,500, first runners-up $1,000, and second runners-up $500.
