The Supreme Court of Nigeria is set to launch an electronic filing system and a digital case management platform on 1 July, marking a significant step in modernizing the country's judicial administration. Chief Registrar Kabir Akanbi announced the development in a statement on Wednesday, highlighting the introduction of the Supreme Court Electronic Filing (E-Filing) System and the Nigeria Case Management System (NCMS).
Launch Date and Key Officials
The formal launch will be conducted by Chief Justice of Nigeria, Kudirat Kekere-Ekun, on 1 July. The new platforms aim to digitize key court operations, including filing and management of cases, reducing reliance on paper-based processes.
Expected Benefits
According to Mr Akanbi, the systems are designed to improve efficiency, transparency, and access to justice. “The E-Filing System and NCMS are designed to enhance efficiency, transparency, accessibility and the timely dispensation of justice by modernising the Court’s case filing and management processes,” he said. The initiative is part of broader efforts to deploy technology in judicial administration and improve service delivery at the apex court.
Context and Adoption
The move comes as Nigeria’s justice sector increasingly adopts digital tools to reduce delays from manual processes and improve case tracking and record management. While electronic filing has been introduced in some lower courts, its deployment at the Supreme Court is expected to streamline procedures at the highest judicial level. The Supreme Court has pursued several reforms in recent years, with technology playing a central role in speeding up judicial processes.
Implementation Details
Mr Akanbi stated that further details on the implementation, including the rollout schedule and operational guidelines, will be announced later. The systems are expected to enhance the timely dispensation of justice and modernize case management at the country's apex court.
