President Tinubu Honors Tony Elumelu on His 63rd Birthday
President Bola Tinubu has extended warm congratulations to economist, banker, and philanthropist Tony Elumelu on the occasion of his 63rd birthday. In a statement released over the weekend, Tinubu described Elumelu as an African business icon and a leading advocate for enterprise across the continent.
Elumelu's Impact and Achievements
Tony Elumelu, who serves as Chairman of Heirs Holdings, United Bank for Africa, and Transcorp, celebrated his birthday on March 22, 2026. President Tinubu commended him for his resilience, commitment to excellence, and unwavering belief in Africapitalism, a philosophy that promotes private sector-led development in Africa.
The President highlighted the significant contributions of the Tony Elumelu Foundation (TEF), noting its pivotal role in empowering young Africans through entrepreneurship. According to Tinubu, the foundation's entrepreneurship programme has trained approximately 2.5 million youths across 54 African countries and provided over 24,000 entrepreneurs with non-refundable seed capital of $5,000 each.
Focus on Youth Development and Economic Transformation
Tinubu emphasized that Elumelu's continued investment in youth development is critical to Africa's economic transformation and job creation efforts. He joined family, friends, and associates in wishing the business leader good health, strength, and greater success in his future endeavors.
This recognition comes as the Tony Elumelu Foundation is actively rallying young entrepreneurs to support Africa's Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) agenda ahead of 2030. Somachi Chris-Asoluka, the Chief Executive Officer of TEF, provided insights during a virtual media parley on Saturday, underscoring the foundation's ongoing commitment to fostering sustainable growth and innovation across the continent.
