Chioma Afe: Sustainability Beyond CSR as Risk Management Tool
Chioma Afe: Sustainability as Risk Management Tool

Chioma Afe, a sustainability advocate, has called on businesses to reposition sustainability beyond corporate social responsibility (CSR), describing it as a strategic risk management tool essential for long-term resilience.

Reframing Sustainability in Corporate Strategy

Speaking at a recent industry forum, Afe argued that companies often treat sustainability as a peripheral CSR activity rather than integrating it into core business operations. She emphasized that sustainability should be embedded in governance frameworks to identify, assess, and mitigate environmental, social, and governance (ESG) risks.

According to Afe, the traditional CSR model focuses on philanthropy and community relations, but fails to address systemic risks that could threaten business continuity. She noted that regulatory pressures, climate change impacts, and shifting stakeholder expectations are making sustainability a board-level priority.

Risk Management and Value Creation

Afe highlighted that proactive sustainability practices can reduce operational costs, enhance brand reputation, and unlock new market opportunities. She cited examples where companies that adopted circular economy principles saw improved resource efficiency and reduced exposure to supply chain disruptions.

“Sustainability is not just about doing good; it is about managing risks that could affect your bottom line,” Afe stated. She urged executives to conduct regular ESG risk assessments and align sustainability targets with financial planning.

Call for Regulatory and Investor Support

The advocate also called on regulators and investors to demand greater transparency in sustainability reporting. She recommended that Nigerian businesses adopt global reporting standards to improve credibility and attract foreign investment.

Afe concluded that companies that embrace sustainability as a risk management tool will be better positioned to navigate uncertainties and achieve sustainable growth. She encouraged boards to appoint dedicated sustainability officers and integrate ESG metrics into performance evaluations.
