FG Nears Completion of 2026-2030 National Development Plan to Boost Economy

The Federal Government is intensifying efforts to finalize the Medium-Term National Development Plan 2026-2030 (MTNDP 2026-2030), with the goal of setting actionable strategies to propel Nigeria toward becoming an upper-middle-income country by 2050. This initiative comes as the nation approaches the 2030 deadline, highlighting a renewed commitment to long-term economic transformation under the current administration.

Government Commitment and Workshop Details

Dr. Doris Uzoka-Anite, the Minister of State for Budget and Economic Planning, emphasized the government's dedication to this development plan during a three-day workshop held in Keffi, Nasarawa State. The workshop, designed for ministries, departments, and agencies (MDAs), serves as a critical platform for reviewing sectoral contributions, updating data, and ensuring alignment with national priorities. Dr. Uzoka-Anite stressed that the MTNDP 2026-2030 is a key component of the broader Nigeria Agenda 2050, aimed at shifting the country from a low-income to an upper-middle-income economy.

She urged participants to adopt a results-driven approach by setting realistic targets and developing effective policies, programs, and projects. Additionally, the minister highlighted the importance of leveraging Nigeria's vast natural resources and adapting to global geopolitical and geoeconomic changes to enhance domestic production, boost consumption, and improve the overall well-being of citizens.

Institutional Strengthening and Past Achievements

Dr. Deborah Odoh, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, described the workshop as part of ongoing efforts to strengthen institutional capacity and improve coordination among government agencies for effective national planning and economic development. She recalled that the previous National Development Plan 2021-2025, aligned with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu's Renewed Hope Agenda, provided a comprehensive framework for sustainable and inclusive growth. This new plan builds on that foundation, with the workshop specifically targeting planning, research, and statistics departments of MDAs to finalize inputs, ensuring coherence, accuracy, and alignment with national development objectives.

Final Stages and Strategic Goals

Dr. Onyemaechi Kwujeli, the Director of Plans and Projects, disclosed that the MTNDP 2026-2030 is in its final stage and incorporates key priorities from the Renewed Hope Agenda, including the ambitious target of achieving a $1 trillion economy by 2030. He noted that this plan is the second in a series of six medium-term plans designed to implement the Nigeria Agenda 2050. The strategies outlined aim to achieve double-digit GDP growth and significantly expand the economic base, setting a clear path for national progress.

A statement by Julie Osagie Jacobs, Director of Information and Public Relations at the Ministry of Budget and Economic Planning, explained that the workshop aims to guide MDAs in structuring sectoral chapters using up-to-date statistics, agreeing on policy initiatives, defining performance indicators, and consolidating inputs to ensure a comprehensive and effective plan document. This collaborative effort underscores the government's proactive stance in driving economic development and securing a prosperous future for Nigeria.
