The Federal Mortgage Bank of Nigeria (FMBN) is set to launch its Diaspora National Housing Fund (NHF) mortgage loan product on August 7, 2026. This initiative aims to provide affordable housing finance specifically for Nigerians living outside the country, allowing them to own homes in Nigeria without the need for physical presence during the application process.
Key Features of the Diaspora NHF Loan
The Diaspora NHF mortgage loan is tailored to meet the unique needs of Nigerians in the diaspora. Eligible applicants must be contributors to the National Housing Fund (NHF) scheme, either through their employers or as voluntary contributors. The loan offers up to N50 million per beneficiary, with a maximum repayment period of 30 years. Applicants are required to provide a minimum equity contribution of 2.5% of the property value. According to FMBN management, the interest rate will be competitive, pegged at 6% per annum, in line with the existing NHF loan framework.
Application Process and Requirements
Nigerians abroad can apply online through the FMBN portal or designated diaspora offices. Required documentation includes a valid Nigerian passport, proof of diaspora residence, evidence of NHF contributions for at least six months, and a property offer letter from an approved developer. The bank has streamlined the process to ensure turnaround time of less than 90 days from application to disbursement.
Impact on Housing and Remittances
This launch is expected to boost the Nigerian housing sector by channeling diaspora remittances into real estate. In 2025, diaspora remittances to Nigeria reached $25 billion, with a significant portion directed to property. The FMBN estimates that the new product could increase housing uptake by 15% among diaspora contributors. The bank’s spokesperson stated, “This initiative empowers Nigerians abroad to invest in their homeland securely, driving economic growth and reducing the housing deficit.”
Eligibility and Contribution Details
To qualify, diaspora Nigerians must be registered NHF contributors. Voluntary contributions start at a minimum of 2.5% of monthly income, capped at N15,000 per month. The loan can be used for building, purchasing, or renovating residential properties in Nigeria. Existing NHF contributors who have been contributing for at least two years can also apply.
Future Plans and Expansion
FMBN plans to partner with Nigerian embassies and diaspora associations to facilitate awareness and application support. The bank is also exploring mobile app integration for easier loan management. The launch event on August 7 will be streamed online, with a Q&A session for potential applicants.
