Senator Adams Oshiomhole, representing Edo North Senatorial District, has publicly endorsed the death penalty for kidnappers and bandits, a measure proposed by his successor, Edo State Governor Monday Okpebholo. The endorsement was made during a gathering of party supporters in Auchi, Etsako West Local Government Area of Edo State.
Endorsement of Capital Punishment
According to a statement released by his Chief Press Secretary, Patrick Ebojele, Oshiomhole praised the Okpebholo administration for restoring sanity in the state. He declared, “I stand here to completely endorse the declaration by the governor of Edo State that we are in a federation where every state has the right to enact laws on punishment when it comes to state offences. So kidnappers and bandits will be punished by death through firing squad.”
State Rights and Legal Framework
Oshiomhole emphasized that under Nigeria's federal system, individual states possess the authority to legislate on penalties for state-level offenses. This legal standpoint underpins the proposed capital punishment for kidnapping and banditry, which have plagued many communities in Edo State. The former governor's backing adds significant political weight to the proposal, potentially influencing legislative action.
Impact on Security and Governance
The endorsement signals a tough-on-crime stance that aims to deter violent criminal activities. Governor Okpebholo's administration has prioritized security, and this measure is part of broader efforts to combat insecurity. If enacted, it would mark a stringent approach to law enforcement, aligning with public demands for safer communities.
