UK Confirms Exact JSA Weekly Amounts for Unemployed in 2026
UK Confirms JSA Weekly Amounts for 2026

The UK government has confirmed the exact weekly amounts that unemployed individuals can receive through the New Style Jobseeker's Allowance (JSA) in 2026. Payments are determined by the claimant's age, with two distinct brackets setting the maximum support levels.

2026 JSA Payment Rates by Age

According to official guidance from the Department for Work and Pensions, people aged under 25 can claim up to £75.65 per week (approximately ₦145,000). Those aged 25 and over are eligible for up to £95.55 per week (approximately ₦183,000). The actual amount a claimant receives depends on their individual circumstances, and the government advises using a benefits calculator to determine exact entitlement.

How to Claim and Payment Schedule

New Style JSA is available to unemployed individuals who are actively seeking work. Claimants must attend an interview at their local Jobcentre Plus office and sign a “Claimant Commitment,” which outlines the steps they will take to find employment. Failing to meet the commitment without a valid reason can result in payment reductions or suspension.

Payments are made directly into the claimant’s bank, building society, or credit union account. There is a waiting period of up to seven days after applying before payments begin, and the first payment can take an additional two weeks to arrive. The initial payment may not reflect the full weekly amount. Subsequent payments are made every two weeks at the full rate.

Duration of New Style JSA

The New Style JSA can be claimed for up to 182 days (approximately six months). After this period ends, claimants are encouraged to speak with their work coach about other available support options.

It is important to note that income-based JSA is no longer available for new applications. Individuals who would have previously applied for that form of support are now directed to apply for Universal Credit. However, the government confirms that it is possible to claim New Style JSA and Universal Credit simultaneously, depending on individual eligibility.
