Bichi Hails Tinubu's ₦1.5tn Kano Rail Project

A member of the House of Representatives, Abubakar Kabir Bichi, has praised President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for approving a ₦1.5 trillion railway project for Kano State, calling it a significant catalyst for economic growth and urban mobility. Bichi, who represents Bichi Federal Constituency and chairs the House Committee on Appropriation, stated that the project, included in the 2025 budget, underscores the administration's commitment to infrastructure development.

Projected Benefits of the Rail System

According to the lawmaker, the proposed rail system is anticipated to enhance connectivity across Kano, streamline movement within the metropolis, and strengthen the state's position as a commercial hub in northern Nigeria. He emphasized that efficient transportation systems are vital for economic activity, noting that modern rail networks have proven their effectiveness in major cities worldwide. “The railway will facilitate trade, create opportunities, and stimulate economic activities across the state,” he said.

Ongoing Infrastructure in the Region

Bichi also highlighted other ongoing projects in the region, including road infrastructure and healthcare investments, as evidence of sustained federal attention to northern Nigeria. He cited projects such as the Kaduna–Zaria–Kano road, the Abuja–Kaduna highway, and developments at the Mallam Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital as part of broader efforts to improve infrastructure and public services.

Addressing Claims of Neglect

The lawmaker dismissed allegations that the current administration has neglected the North, arguing that multiple initiatives across various sectors, from agriculture to security, demonstrate a more balanced approach to development. He added that such projects have bolstered public confidence and could influence political support in future elections.

Economic Potential of Kano

With Kano regarded as one of Nigeria's largest commercial hubs, stakeholders have long identified transport infrastructure as key to unlocking its economic potential. The rail project, if implemented as planned, is expected to enhance logistics, reduce travel time, and support business activity within the state and beyond.
