Blackout Looms in Lagos as Egbin Power Station Shuts

Lagos state and its surrounding areas may experience a total blackout following the sudden shutdown of the Egbin Power Station, Nigeria's largest electricity-generating plant on the national grid. The facility suffered a major operational disturbance, resulting in a complete loss of generation.

Cause of the Shutdown

According to reports, the shutdown was triggered by a failure in the plant's central compressor, coupled with a malfunction in the circulating water pump system. These issues necessitated an immediate shutdown of all generating units to prevent further damage and ensure the safety of the facility.

Impact on Power Supply

The situation has significantly reduced available power generation nationwide. Lagos, being one of the most affected areas due to its high electricity demand and heavy dependence on grid supply, is facing the prospect of a prolonged blackout. Compounding the crisis is a transmission constraint caused by the forced outage of the Osogbo–Ikeja West 330kV transmission line, which has further restricted the evacuation of available electricity into the Lagos load centre.

Authorities are working to resolve the issues, but no timeline has been given for the restoration of full generation capacity. Residents and businesses in Lagos are advised to prepare for extended power outages.
