Federal Government Inspects New Abeokuta Power Substation to Boost National Electricity Supply
The Federal Government has announced that Nigeria's power sector is poised for a substantial enhancement as construction advances on crucial infrastructure under the Presidential Power Initiative (PPI). The New Abeokuta Substation in Ogun State stands out as a flagship project anticipated to significantly strengthen electricity supply across the nation.
Project Details and Inspection
Located in Toolu Community within Obafemi Owode Local Council, this substation is a component of the PPI, which is being executed by the FGN Power Company in collaboration with Siemens Energy as the technical partner. During a recent joint inspection of the facility, Managing Director of FGN Power Company, Kenny Anuwe, emphasized the substation's pivotal role in ongoing efforts to modernize and expand the national grid.
Anuwe highlighted that the new Abeokuta substation is projected to increase capacity by approximately 480 megawatts. This addition will complement existing infrastructure and improve electricity delivery not only in Ogun State but also in neighboring regions, addressing long-standing power deficits.
Progress and Timeline
Elie Akiki, Project Director at Siemens Energy, provided an update on the construction progress, stating that work at the Abeokuta site is proceeding according to schedule. He expressed confidence that the substation will be completed and commissioned before the end of 2026, adhering to the agreed timelines. This assurance underscores the commitment to timely delivery of critical energy infrastructure.
Governor's Call for Investor-Friendly Environment
In a related development, Ogun State Governor, Dapo Abiodun, has urged traditional rulers across the state to foster a conducive and investor-friendly atmosphere in their domains. He issued a warning that hostility toward investors could jeopardize the state's economic growth prospects.
Governor Abiodun made this appeal during the statutory meeting of the Ogun State Council of Obas, held at the Oba's Complex in Oke-Mosan, Abeokuta. He voiced concern over reports of uncooperative attitudes in some communities, particularly in areas such as Yewa South, Ipokia, and Ijebu North.
The governor condemned what he described as hostility toward investors who are prepared to invest billions of dollars into the state's economy. He stressed that such investments are vital for job creation, infrastructure development, and overall socio-economic advancement. Abiodun emphasized that communities must take ownership of development initiatives rather than obstruct them, highlighting the importance of collaboration for sustainable growth.
This inspection and the governor's remarks underscore a concerted effort to enhance Nigeria's power infrastructure while promoting an environment that attracts and retains investments, ultimately driving national development forward.
