A significant fire has crippled a major power infrastructure in Katsina, plunging key parts of the state capital into darkness. The incident involved a critical transformer at the IBB Way Injection Substation.
Substation Fire Halts Power Supply
The Kano Electricity Distribution Company (KEDCO) confirmed that a 15 MVA TR3 power transformer caught fire at the IBB Way Injection Substation. The blaze, which occurred in the late hours of Sunday, January 4, 2026, forced the electricity distributor to isolate the facility to prevent further danger.
In a statement released on Monday, January 5, and signed by the Head of Corporate Communication, Sani Bala Sani, the company acknowledged the widespread outage but stated that the precise cause of the fire remains undetermined. A technical team has been deployed to the site to investigate the origins and evaluate the full scope of the damage.
Widespread Impact Across Metropolis
The power failure has affected a substantial portion of Katsina metropolis. KEDCO listed the impacted areas, which include:
- Kofar Kaura
- Government Reserved Area (GRA)
- Dandagoro
- Parts of Kofar Marusa
- Janbango
- Kano Road and surrounding environs
The company emphasized that the isolation of the affected areas was a necessary safety precaution to protect lives and property in the community.

KEDCO has assured customers that restoring power is its top priority. The DisCo expressed regret for the inconvenience caused and stated that its engineers are working to return electricity supply in the shortest possible time.
