TCN Announces Four-Day Preventive Maintenance in Ondo Region

The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has officially announced a planned preventive maintenance exercise that will result in temporary power outages across specific areas of Ondo State. This critical infrastructure work is scheduled to take place over a four-day period, from Monday, February 2, to Thursday, February 5, 2026.

Maintenance Details and Schedule

According to a statement released by TCN on social media platform X, the maintenance will focus on the Ife/Ondo 330/132kV and 132/33kV Transmission Substation. The work will be conducted daily between 8:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. during the specified dates. This timing has been carefully selected to minimize disruption while allowing engineers to complete essential upgrades to the transmission infrastructure.

The primary objectives of this maintenance exercise include:

  • Decommissioning an old wave trap and installing a new one at the Ife/Ondo substation
  • Replacing single-circuit towers on the Ife/Ondo 132/33kV line with new double-circuit towers
  • Strengthening the national transmission grid to improve overall reliability

Impact on Electricity Supply

The maintenance activities will necessarily interrupt bulk electricity supply to the affected regions. Specifically, the Benin Electricity Distribution Company (BEDC) will be unable to supply power to customers in Okitipupa, Ondo, and surrounding areas throughout the maintenance period.

TCN has expressed regret for any inconvenience this planned outage may cause to residents and businesses in the affected areas. The company has assured customers that bulk electricity supply will be restored immediately upon completion of the maintenance work, with the expectation that the upgraded infrastructure will provide more stable and efficient power transmission in the long term.

Broader Context of Nigeria's Power Infrastructure

This maintenance exercise forms part of TCN's ongoing efforts to strengthen Nigeria's national transmission grid. As the government-owned entity responsible for electricity transmission across the country, TCN plays a central role in managing high-voltage transmission lines and substations that connect power generation companies to distribution companies.

The timing of this planned maintenance is particularly significant given recent challenges with Nigeria's power infrastructure. Earlier in 2026, the national grid experienced two separate collapses, with the most recent occurring on January 27. These incidents highlighted concerns about the fragility of Nigeria's power system and its ability to provide consistent electricity supply to households and businesses nationwide.

TCN's preventive maintenance approach represents a proactive strategy to address infrastructure vulnerabilities before they lead to unplanned outages. By replacing aging components and upgrading transmission capacity, the company aims to reduce transmission losses and support Nigeria's long-term energy development goals.
