The Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company (IBEDC) has formally addressed the persistent and erratic power supply affecting millions of its customers. In a statement released on 18 December 2025, the DisCo attributed the widespread outages to a significant reduction in the amount of electricity it receives from the national grid.
Root Cause: Limited Allocation from National Grid
IBEDC stated that the core of the problem is a supply constraint originating from the national grid. This reduced load allocation has severely limited the quantum of power the company can distribute across its entire network. The situation has led to intermittent supply and prolonged blackouts in many communities, disrupting daily life and business operations.
Widespread Impact Across Multiple States
The effects of this shortage are being felt extensively. IBEDC confirmed that customers in Oyo, Ogun, Osun, and Kwara states are impacted. Specific areas within the Ibadan metropolis are also experiencing these extended periods of darkness. The company expressed sincere regret for the inconvenience caused by the unstable power supply.
Strategic Management and Future Steps
While seeking a lasting solution, IBEDC is carefully managing the limited available electricity. The company is strategically allocating and equitably distributing power across its various feeders and service bands. This approach aims to balance operational efficiency with fairness to all customers during this challenging period.
Furthermore, IBEDC revealed it is in active engagement with the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) and the Nigeria Independent System Operator (NISO). The goal of these discussions is to address the allocation challenge and work towards restoring stable and improved power supply across its franchise area.
The electricity distributor has appealed for patience and understanding from its customers. IBEDC assured the public that it remains committed to providing updates as the situation evolves and efforts to stabilise the grid continue.
