The Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company (IBEDC) has formally addressed the widespread and persistent power failures affecting millions of its customers. In a statement released on Wednesday, 17 December 2025, the DisCo attributed the erratic supply to a significant reduction in the amount of electricity allocated to it from the national grid.
Widespread Impact Across Multiple States
IBEDC confirmed that the supply constraints are severely impacting residents and businesses across Oyo, Ogun, Osun, and Kwara states, including significant parts of the Ibadan metropolis. This reduced load from the national grid has drastically limited the volume of power the company can distribute through its network, leading to extended blackout periods in numerous communities.
The company expressed regret for the inconvenience caused and acknowledged that customers are experiencing longer-than-usual outage times due to this development.
Engagements for Stability and Interim Measures
To tackle the root cause, IBEDC stated it is in active discussions with key national power sector players. The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) and the Nigeria Independent System Operator (NISO) are being engaged to find a lasting solution and improve supply stability within the franchise area.
While awaiting an improvement in grid allocation, IBEDC explained it is managing the scarce available power strategically. The limited supply is being allocated and distributed equitably across its various feeders and service bands. This approach, the company says, is to ensure fairness to all customers while maintaining operational efficiency during this challenging period.
IBEDC appealed for continued patience from its customers and promised to provide regular updates as the situation evolves.
Crackdown on Energy Theft and Vandalism Intensifies
In a related development, IBEDC announced it has intensified its fight against criminal activities affecting its operations. The company is cracking down on energy theft, vandalism, and attacks on its personnel, with several arrests made and prosecutions initiated.
One specific case highlighted involves Mrs. Adebola Arowona of Oluyole Estate, Ibadan. The incident occurred on Saturday, 15 November 2025, when IBEDC officials on a routine inspection at her premises discovered clear evidence of meter tampering and energy theft.
The situation escalated when Mrs. Arowona, allegedly assisted by a middle-aged man believed to be her husband, resisted disconnection. She reportedly became violent, pushing an IBEDC worker off a ladder and slapping another. A viral video from the incident captured her picking up a stone and smashing the windscreen of the company's Hilux vehicle.
Mrs. Arowona has been arrested and charged to court, while the suspected husband remains at large and is wanted by the police. IBEDC emphasized its commitment to ensuring perpetrators of such acts face the full wrath of the law.
