Transmission Company of Nigeria Announces Scheduled Maintenance at Niger Substation
The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has issued a public notice regarding a planned two-day maintenance exercise at its Zungeru Transmission Substation located in Niger State. This essential work is scheduled to take place on February 18 and 19, 2026, and will involve temporary power interruptions in specific regions.
Details of the Maintenance Schedule and Impact
In an official statement released on Wednesday, TCN's General Manager of Public Affairs, Ndidi Mbah, provided comprehensive details about the maintenance operation. The work will be conducted each day from 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. during the specified dates. The technical activities will focus on critical equipment, including a 150MVA 330/132/33kV transformer, a 5.5MVA 33/11kV transformer, and associated switchgears at the facility.
TCN has assured that electricity supply will largely remain stable throughout the maintenance period. This stability will be achieved by transferring loads to a second 150MVA transformer within the same substation. Consequently, customers served by the Abuja Electricity Distribution Company and the Kaduna Electricity Distribution Company, particularly those connected to the transformer undergoing maintenance, should continue to receive power without significant disruption.
Areas Expected to Experience Brief Interruptions
Despite the overall stability measures, TCN has identified specific communities that will experience brief power interruptions during the load transfer process. Residents in Kontagora, Tegina, Yauri, and surrounding areas should anticipate these temporary outages. The company emphasized that these interruptions are necessary to ensure a safe and efficient transition during the maintenance activities.
Ndidi Mbah explained that this scheduled maintenance is part of TCN's routine efforts to ensure optimal performance and long-term efficiency of equipment at the substation. Regular maintenance is crucial for preventing unexpected failures and maintaining reliable power transmission across the grid. The company has advised residents and businesses in the affected areas to plan accordingly for the brief periods of interruption.
Importance of Proactive Maintenance in Power Infrastructure
This announcement highlights TCN's commitment to proactive infrastructure management. By conducting scheduled maintenance, the company aims to enhance the reliability and durability of its transmission assets, ultimately benefiting consumers through improved service delivery. Such exercises are standard practice in the power sector to address wear and tear, upgrade components, and ensure compliance with safety standards.
The maintenance at Zungeru Substation underscores the ongoing efforts to strengthen Nigeria's power transmission network. As the nation continues to address challenges in the electricity sector, initiatives like this contribute to building a more resilient and efficient grid. TCN's transparent communication regarding the schedule and potential impacts allows stakeholders to prepare and minimize inconvenience.
