Woman's Solar Installation Nightmare: Home Damage Sparks Legal Threat
A US-based woman, Katy Collins, has publicly expressed deep hatred for solar power following a disastrous installation that caused significant damage to her home. In a Facebook post on March 7, she detailed her unpleasant experience, highlighting structural issues and leaks resulting from the poor workmanship.
Details of the Damage
Katy Collins shared several photos showing the extent of the damage, which included improperly screwed and sealed solar equipment. She lamented that the weight of the installation led to cracks in her beams and created two leaking points in her house. Additionally, she noted that the installers placed the power box on the south side of the house, voiding its warranty.
In her own words, Katy stated: "I hate solar, I hate solar, I hate solar!!! They couldn’t even get the screws in right or sealed right! We have beams cracking from the weight, and 2 leaks! And our house is being squished. And the installer (like sooooo many others) went out of business and bankrupt! Oh, and they also put the power box on the south side of the house which voids the warranty on it…"
Legal Implications and Installer Bankruptcy
Katy disclosed that the solar installers have not only gone out of business but are also bankrupt, leaving her with limited recourse. She hinted at involving a legal practitioner, commenting: "...It’s a legal/lawyer issue at this point. All the fun." This situation underscores the risks associated with hiring unreliable contractors for renewable energy projects.
Public Reactions and Related Incidents
The Facebook post garnered various reactions from users. Dee Ash simply said: "Oh no," while Cathy Lynn expressed hope for a fix: "Oh no !! I hope they fix it." Arnold Fowler advised caution, stating: "I hope someone holds them accountable. I never touch roofs. I only do ground mounts and canopies."
This incident is part of a broader trend of solar installation woes. In a related story, a landlady explained her refusal to allow tenants to install solar panels due to potential damage. Additionally, another report highlighted a lady who spent millions on a solar setup only to return to using a generator, citing poor performance and unmet expectations amid Nigeria's electricity challenges.
The case of Katy Collins serves as a cautionary tale for homeowners considering solar power, emphasizing the importance of vetting installers and ensuring proper installation to avoid costly damages and legal battles.
