Aliko Dangote, Africa's richest man with a net worth of $35.1 billion, has pledged to donate one-third of his wealth to charitable causes, his daughter Halima Dangote disclosed in an interview with Bloomberg published on July 28.
Halima, a trustee of the Aliko Dangote Foundation, explained that her father has secured his family's support to allocate 33 percent of his estate to philanthropy. Based on current valuations, this portion amounts to approximately $11.7 billion.
Philanthropy as a Core Legacy
According to Halima, Dangote views philanthropy as central to his legacy and has integrated it into the family's long-term succession plans. "He sort of put all the structure in place whereby we focus a lot on health and education," she told Bloomberg.
She elaborated on the Islamic principles guiding the decision: "He actually donated 25 percent to the foundation. If you look at it, it is what we call in Sharia Code in Islam; it means he has donated 33 percent of his whole inheritance to his foundation."
Generational Commitment
The commitment extends beyond a one-time gift. Halima emphasized that philanthropy is meant to endure across generations. "That is how important it is to him because philanthropy needs to be in existence generation after generation," she said.
"So giving back is part and parcel of what we do. We believe we're here, that our business is successful because of the giving back and because of the philanthropic aspect. That is why the 33 percent is important."
Legal and Family Endorsement
The donation is formalized through a will. Halima revealed that her father asked her, her two sisters, and his mother to sign the will, legally binding the transfer of 33 percent of his estate to humanitarian efforts. "And that is why he made an announcement and he asked myself, my two sisters and his mother to sign under that will that he is able to give that 33 percent to humanity," she explained.
Existing Philanthropic Impact
The Aliko Dangote Foundation already operates extensive programs across Africa, spending more than ₦50 billion annually on health, education, and other initiatives. Earlier this year, TIME magazine recognized Dangote's charitable work by naming him to its inaugural TIME100 Philanthropy list, highlighting his influence in the philanthropic sector.
Dangote's pledge follows a trend among billionaires to commit significant portions of their wealth to charity, though his is among the largest such commitments from an African billionaire. The foundation's focus areas align with urgent needs on the continent, including disease prevention, nutrition, and access to education.
The announcement has generated widespread discussion about wealth redistribution and the role of private philanthropy in addressing societal challenges. Observers note that Dangote's decision sets a powerful example for other high-net-worth individuals in Africa and globally.
