The Making of an Entrepreneur
Born in Calabar with roots in Nnewi South, Anambra State, Uzochukwu grew up in Jos, Plateau State, where he earned a degree in Botany from the University of Jos. Long before founding Stanel Oil in 2012, he worked as an 'Oshaya boy,' hawking perfumes and shirts, occasionally sleeping in market stalls. His entry into the petroleum supply business led to the creation of Stanel Group, which now spans energy, retail, automobile services, agribusiness, hospitality, and consumer goods. A pivotal moment came when he sought mentorship from Dr Cosmas Maduka. Instead of asking for money, he requested knowledge and credibility. Maduka later deposited ₦150 million into his account without collateral or interest. Uzochukwu repaid the full amount within a year. "The least thing you can get from a great man is money," Uzochukwu later reflected. He has since pursued executive education at Harvard Kennedy School and Oxford, alongside an MBA, demonstrating that learning never stops.
Philanthropy as a Way of Life
The Stanley Uzochukwu Foundation, established in 2013, channels his experiences into transformative support. It has mentored over 2,000 young entrepreneurs and professionals. As early as 2017, The Guardian reported his support for about 1,000 widows and orphans from various religions, with regular visits since 2011. In 2021, his birthday outreach in Awka attracted over 10,000 widows, orphans, and persons with disabilities; cars were given to the disabled, and over ₦20 million distributed alongside food, clothing, and educational materials. The foundation crosses religious lines, organizing Ramadan and Sallah programs for Muslim communities. In 2026, the Suleja Emirate Council commended an initiative that fed over 10,000 Muslims and supported inmates. In October 2024, the foundation awarded ₦40 million in grants to 80 SMEs, combining funding with mentorship. Most notably, in 2025, Uzochukwu donated his personal residence in Jos as an orphanage, rebuilt the JOFIN orphanage and school, and provided scholarships, salaries, and healthcare. In March 2025, Uzochukwu hosted a surprise 88th-birthday dinner for former President Olusegun Obasanjo, attended by former Presidents Goodluck Jonathan and Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar, and numerous governors and monarchs. In June 2026, The Delborough celebrated the 85th birthday of its Board Chairman, the Obi of Onitsha, with Obasanjo, Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, and Peter Obi present. Despite his influence, Uzochukwu has publicly declined interest in political office, stating his fulfilment comes from mentoring young people toward financial independence.
Enterprise as Social Impact
Stanel's Awka operations include petroleum retail, a bakery, supermarket, farmers' market, automobile clinic, car wash, laundry, and restaurant—an ecosystem model. The Guardian has reported that his businesses have provided employment and training for over 7,000 young people. The Delborough Lagos aims to set a standard for African-owned luxury hospitality. In Ozubulu, Anambra State, an industrial project featuring factories for PET bottles, nylon, and fruit juice is expected to create over 5,000 direct and indirect jobs, embodying the 'Aku Ruo Ulo' philosophy of reinvesting home into productive infrastructure.
